Maya arrived at the hospital in a record time. She had Farkle drive her. But her concern wasn't for the time she had gotten there. She would've preferred she never found out. Her concern was the fact the boy she loved would not remember her. When she walked — no ran — to his room, she saw his parents crying and they looked at her crying and it brought tears to her eyes.
"He's frightened and...and he can't remember us!" Jennifer yelled in the saddest voice Maya had heard from her all evening. "Go...Go see if he remembers you," Jennifer urgerd. So Maya approached the door with cautious. She slowly opened it and she heard the yelling and screaming of the guy she loved in such a short time.
"Maya…" he said. Her heart leaped. She ran to him and he caught her in his arms when she flew onto the bed.
"Don't scare me like that again!" she yelled into his shoulder as she cried with relief. She felt his arms wrap her up in a secure tight hug. She kept crying and he felt his hospital gown soak up.
"Maya, Maya…" he pulled back.
"What?" she asked. He looked into her eyes and she looked confused and… oh…
"You love me…" he said with shock clear in his voice and her heart broke. She almost started bawling again as she understood.
"What's the last thing you remember, Charlie?" Maya asked. Charlie looked at her in deep thought.
"Asking Riley to the dance," he answered and she almost sobbed.
"Who do you remember?" she asked.
"Just you and Riley. Maya tell me what happened? Why can't I remember anything?" she kept sobbing but forced herself to quiet herself.
"You and...Lucas got...into a...fight. He got you really good," Maya said her quiet sobs slipping in between her sentence, He looked at her confused.
"Lucas? Who's Lucas?"
"Doesn't matter," she sobbed.
"What'd we get into fight about? Nothing that important I hope," Charlie chuckled.
"Me," she said her voice trembling. She climbed off the bed as he sat stunned.
"Were we...Did we.." he never finished. She was crying too much and he didn't want to push any more buttons. Charlie reached out but she shook her head putting more space in between herself and Charlie. He felt his heart tug.
"It...It doesn't matter...Charlie do you love Riley?" she asked. He was looking at her with sorrow and sadness in his eyes.
"Yes, Maya. I'm so sorry," she sobbed as she ran out of the room. His parents caught her but she sobbed and shook her head running out of the hospital and running into Farkle's arms. He caught her and just shushed her and helped her into the car but he wasn't planning on driving off anywhere yet. He sat with her in his lap and her sobbing her heart out. She felt rejected and… left.
