Five Times Jack and Ralph Fooled Around (And One Time They Didn't)

…1…

The first time they fooled around, it was in high school after gym class. They had to stay late for fighting and with emotions and hormones flying high, one thing led to another. While Jack was only left with a brief feeling of shame, Ralph was utterly disappointed.

…2…

The second time it happened was the first time that they got drunk together. From the moment Jack drunkenly stroked his hair, Ralph knew things were going to end up badly. But he let himself fall anyways.

…3…

They had just gotten their very first apartment. It was a tiny, two bedroom flat up five flights of stairs in need of some serious repairs. But they loved it all the same. That night they celebrated. The next morning when Ralph woke up to an empty apartment, his heart sank. It kept getting lower and lower until it finally shattered on the floor as Jack came stumbling through the door at four am, plastered and smelling of cheap perfume.

…4…

The next time couldn't be blamed on alcohol. They were both fine. Although Jack had just gotten dumped by his girlfriend and Ralph was kinda in love with his best friend: they were completely sober. After sex, when Jack had sobbed into Ralph's chest, Ralph lied to himself saying, 'he's going to be fine.'

…5…

They last time they did it, it was a goodbye. They made love for hours, knowing that Jack had to get up in the morning for his flight. He was going to visit his Uncle in America for a week, knowing that it would be his Uncle's last year alive. They slept curled around each other, holding on tightly. When they woke up, they beamed sleepy smiles at each other and got breakfast, eating in companionable silence. As Ralph watched Jack board the plane, he dared to hope. He thought, 'everything will be alright now.'

A week later, Ralph got a telegraph from Jack. It said that he was engaged and he was no longer returning to England. For the first time, Ralph let himself cry.
