Benjamin Bunny was carried into his home by his father, Mr Bouncer.
'Now then' said Mr Bouncer, setting his son down on the floor. 'What have you got to say for yourself? You and your cousin running off into Mr McGregor's garden like that! You could've been killed!'
Benjamin hung his head in shame. Only today, he and his cousin Peter Rabbit had went into the farmer's garden to bring back Peter's blue jacket and shoes and a bag of onions for Peter's mother, Josephine. When they had tried to leave, Mr McGregor's cat had them trapped under a basket and Mr Bouncer had come to their rescue. Then the two bunnies had their ears yanked and their backsides whipped.
'I'm sorry, Father' Benjamin said, tears running down his furry face. 'It was all my fault'
'What was this all about? Why did you go?' asked the father, firmly.
Benjamin sat down and explained the story.
'...and then you came and saved us' he finished.
'I see' Mr Bouncer said.
'Peter didn't want anything to do with it. He kept saying he wanted to go home'
Mr Bouncer suddenly felt a pain of guilt in his body. He shouldn't have whipped his nephew if he had not wanted any part of what Benjamin had explained. It was none of Peter's fault.
Both the son and father sat quiet for a few minutes, until...
'Come on son' Mr Bouncer took Benjamin's paw and they walked out the door. 'We're going back to Aunt Josephine's'
XXXXXXX
There was a knock on Josephine's door.
'Come in'
In walked Mr Bouncer and Benjamin.
'Hello again, Mr Bouncer' Josephine greeted them. 'Pray may I ask what brings you back?'
'May we have a word with Peter?' asked Mr Bouncer.
'Of course' Josephine said, quietly. 'Peter!' Your uncle wants to talk with you!'
Peter Rabbit came into the living room, still wearing his clogs and blue jacket. He was looking guilty it looked like he had been crying very hard.
'Yes, Uncle Bouncer?' he croaked, unable to look him in the eyes. This made Mr Bouncer feel even more ashamed.
'Peter...Benjamin told me everything and I should not have done what I did to you back at the garden. You didn't deserve it. I'm am sorry. I don't want you to hate me'
Peter finally looked up at his uncle. 'It's ok, Uncle Bouncer'
'No it's not' said Benjamin, hugging his cousin. 'I was the one that deserved to be punished because I made you come to the garden with me. I'm sorry too, Peter!'
And after a moment of silence, both young bunnies began to sob in each others arms.
