Title: I Wish You Were Here
A/N: Many thanks to Tumblr user veji for requesting this. I'm sorry it's kind of short but I felt that it kind of fit better as a drabble than a full on story. I've been trying to write Romanogers for ages without success. I'd had zero ideas! But I'm actually fairly happy with how this turned out, and I hope to write more in this fandom soon!
Requests on my Tumblr page are still open! Link in my profile :]
Steve had long since gotten used to the fact that dating a renowned super spy wasn't always all it was cracked up to be.
He was used to the fact that she kept odd hours: sometimes waking up before him to head down to the gym, sometimes coming home after him after being at S.H.I.E.L.D. all day. He was aware that pushing her buttons too much was something to steer clear of, just as asking about her past was. He knew every scar that lined her body, and every near invisible freckle.
He knew everything about her, and before he'd even really known what was happening, she became a constant in his life. Something he was sure of.
But one thing he wasn't sure he'd ever get used to was how empty he felt when she wasn't around.
No matter how much he pretended to be annoyed by her constant teasing and jibes at his age, when it was absent in his life, he noticed it.
He missed waking up to find, that even when she was already gone, she'd already brewed coffee for him, leaving his favorite mug on the counter. It was the little things that made his heart ache in an embarrassingly angsty way, the little things that many people would take for granted.
So on missions that were on the longer side (anywhere from 3 days onward was considered long to Steve) they usually tried to find means of communication. It was a dangerous and stupid thing to do but Steve had never regretted it.
This particular time, Natasha had managed to get ahold of a burner phone. He'd woken up to a message from an unknown number that featured simply a winking face and was signed "-Nat".
He hadn't hesitated to text back.
I wish you were here.
Her reply came a few minutes later.
Me too.
To some people it wouldn't have been considered very heartfelt, but Steve smiled because he knew, in her own way, that she was telling him so much more.
