Summary: I am never nice to Meiru, apparently. Netto can't love her and it's not his fault, but that's not something she can easily accept. Contains shounen-ai, obviously.

Disclaimer: I don't own the song or the source.

"Netto-kun!"

It had been just 'Netto' for a while, for the shortest time. But not anymore. Never again. It couldn't be.

He turned and waved, smiling that usual Netto-smile. "Hey, Meiru-chan! Are we still walking to school together?"

Like it wasn't totally awkward. Well, it probably wasn't for him.

Meiru was aware she was being a bit selfish, but she couldn't help feeling that way. Netto hadn't chosen to be in love with someone else, after all, even if she was the one who suffered for it.

She could blame him, though.

"Of course we are!" She smiled, knowing he wouldn't see through the fakeness of it. The walk to high school was longer than the one they had taken to elementary and then junior high, but they still did it. They were best friends, after all. Right?

How could he not tell how she felt?

"Cool," he gave her a thumbs-up, and skated into line next to her, keeping easy pace with her scooter. "So. Um. I'm sorry about..."

"Don't be! It's not your fault." She kept smiling. Even Netto would see through that, wouldn't he?

It really wasn't his fault she was in love with him, was it?

"Okay." He seemed fine with that. Of course he was! She should have known better than to think he'd pick up on anything.

They were quiet for a while while they walked. Netto was humming cheerfully, Meiru was trying not to be too upset. Usually they talked on the way, but there was really nothing to talk about now.

It seemed so wrong.

Meiru's thoughts strayed down a rather petulant branch. Why couldn't she be the one he was crazy about? Why had she wasted her time so long? Why couldn't she change how she felt?

"We're going to be late," that was as good as anything to get annoyed about, right?

"Not really! We left pretty early this morning." Way to miss the point, Netto, she thought bitterly.

She resisted the urge to stomp and carry on. That would only make her fall off her scooter.

"Netto-kun! You have an e-mail. It's from Enzan," Rockman's chipper voice popped up several blocks away from the school.

"Eh? He knows I have school now. What's it about, Rockman?"

Meiru visualized herself knocking the PET out of Netto's hands and into the road where it could and would be run over by no less than six cars. But no.

"He wants to meet you after school today. He says he'll come pick you up. Should I compose a response?"

That brilliant look in Netto's eyes hurt her to look at. "Of course I'll go! Could you?"

"Got it, Netto-kun!"

She fumed silently. When they got near the school and the grass on the lawn outside, Rockman popped up again, cheerfully informing Netto the message was sent. Meiru's reaction was instant and vicious. The blue PET flew out of Netto's hands and landed on the grass a distance away, only slightly disturbed by the cry of the Navi within and the operator who should have held it. Netto stared at Meiru as if seeing her for the first time. He looked stunned.

She picked up her scooter and stomped off into the school, leaving him to recollect his Navi after the shock wore off. No, it wasn't his fault, but it wasn't fair either. There were tears streaming down her face as she silently acknowledged it would never be the same again.

Why do you look right through me
thinking
"No"
I can't deny my feelings
Growing strong
I try to keep believing
dreaming on
And every time I see you
I crave more
I wanna pull you closer
closer
closer
closer
but you leave me feeling frozen

Like I said. Never nice to Meiru. Hi again? It's been a while. Reviews are nice but not needed.
