Prologue:

Water poured from the dark grey sky, soaking the land below it. An occurrence such as this was not uncommon during this time of the year. It's what some would call a rainy season, though that would definitely be far from that since it did not happen a lot. It was the time between spring and summer where rain came only once in a blue moon, which was rather rare because of the sunny days that normally occurred. The land was filled with nourishment, but the lack of rain for the season made it harder for crops to grow (though it was only very few places in Italy where this was true). Many normally spent these rainy days indoors to allow their fields to get watered and for their plants to grow, but that wasn't true for everyone.

These people were the Roman soldiers that protected the land, the people, and the empire from the people that they knew as "barbarians." Even on rainy days, they would patrol the streets in order to make sure that everything was in order, though some of them would have preferred to stay inside like most others would. Donned in tunics, armor, and sandaled boots, they walked through those (sometimes muddy) streets to make sure enemies did not try to attack during such a day. The only thing that protected these warriors from the rain were their cloaks that reached down to about mid-thigh. It did not do much though since they would still get caked in mud, which made the soldiers' lives a bit harder. Though this was not true for all of them. Some of these men were of higher rank than others and, therefore, would have servants who could do it for them. Those men were few, however. Nobility rank was determined by the magic they used. The more powerful it was the higher rank they would be.

There were very few, though, that had the power almost equal to that of the emperor's. Those were the most favored of the men and, therefore, were given ranks depending on their military knowledge or just their knowledge in general. These men were even more powerful than most soldiers. Some of these men abused their power and no one dared to oppose them, but some did not.

However, there are some who are not even of noble blood who can use magic. These people were even rarer and are hard to find since those people try to hide it from the rest of the world.
