It was a beautiful Sunday afternoon. They had decided earlier that week to take a drive out to the Hamptons, and spend the weekend. It would be the first time in weeks that Kate had the entire weekend off and the weather was perfect. As they drove back towards the city, he couldn't help but think about how perfect the day was. The sun was shining and there wasn't a cloud in the sky. His girlfriend was sitting next to him, how else could this be better?

He looked ahead and saw the traffic light change from yellow to red. Slowing down to a stop he glanced out the window on his side. This day really was perfect. Reaching over he grabbed Kate's hand and gave it a slight squeeze. Something felt different. Her hand was almost limp in his. Looking over, he saw her staring out her own window before turning to look him in the eye.

"It's over," She stated simply.

'Over?' His mind reiterated as his face registered the shock he felt. Sure they had been drifting apart, but this weekend was wonderful. He thought that they had made progress on saving their relationship. Hell that's why he cleared his weekend so they could come out here. This was supposed to help them.

'It's over,' his mind repeated again. That was the last thing he thought she was going to say. He thought that she was going to comment on the gorgeous weather they had all weekend, or maybe the older couple kissing on the corner saying how that could be them in a few years.

Is this how 'I don't love you' feels? He instantly regrets every time he told a past girlfriend that exact phrase. Some how he wishes that they had fought with loud arguing in the middle of a rainy night. He laughs silently at how cliché that sounded. She could have even told him some lie about there being someone else. He wouldn't have believed her, but at least then he could have been prepared for this. It felt like a sucker punch and the longer her stared into her eyes to more it hurt. He had to look away. Anywhere but her cold eyes.

'Outside, look outside,' his mind prompted. There's a car in front of them. He can see a man in the drivers seat and a woman sitting in the back seat hunched over the seat next to her. Probably calming their baby back to a peaceful state. His mind jumps at hyper speed to the images he had had of the children that Kate and him would have produced. Shaking his head he moves his eyes to the car stopped on his left. There's an older man dressed in a tailored suit, gently drumming his fingers on the steering wheel. The sunshine casting a small glint off his wedding band. Was this day mocking him?

He looked past the cars and watched as the world kept moving around them. He is envious of their ability to keep moving while his world comes crashing down. He senses movement in front of him and shifts his gaze to see the light had turned green. Slowly he accelerates and began moving them forward while dropping Kate's hand. He hears her take a breath. "Josh, I-"

"Don't," He stops her. "There's nothing to say."
