Run!
That's all Peeta can think as a gunshot rings out, breaking the silence, and pandemonium reigns.
Get to Katniss. Protect her. Die for her, if you have to. That's what you swore to yourself that you'd do, isn't it? Protect her with your own life? She's too precious for anyone to lose, after all, and worth so much more than you could ever hope to be. That's why you love her – she has this way about her that draws everyone in, making them unable to refuse her anything.
I volunteer. I volunteer as tribute.
The worst collection of words you've ever heard strung together. But, then again, that's who Katniss is. She loves her sister too much to send her to the Capitol, so she sacrifices herself instead, just as you would do for her.
Were she to threaten your life, you'd say, "Take it – it's yours," and spread your arms wide, welcoming death only if she were your deliverer. For her to be the last thing you see would make your life have been worthwhile. To die for her would be even more so. And that's how you plan on staying true to yourself throughout this whole ordeal – think of Katniss, think of how much you love her and the lengths you would go to ensure her safety. With that in mind, you can never be lost.
So, I just watched the official trailer for the Hunger Games movie, and was struck by the look in Peeta's eyes at the start of the Games, while running. I just can't help but think that he was looking for Katniss. This little drabble, then, was born out of that scene, and what I felt that Peeta may have been thinking.
