2/27/2011 – prompt: 2 A.M.

Wufei opened his eyes. It was still dark in the small room. He looked around at the low bedside table. It was two a.m. He listened intently; no, there was no one else in the room.

He turned on his back and stared at the ceiling. He had been waking up all night, ever since he went to bed at nine. The black-haired boy rubbed his eyes and sat up. The first thing he saw was the empty bed next to his. He shook his head; had he grown so accustomed to the other's presence he couldn't even sleep with the boy gone?

Wufei padded to the bathroom to get a glass of water. He didn't bother turning on the light. He knew the room well enough to be sure he wouldn't hit his toes. While he was in the tiny bathroom, he heard the door open.

"Wufei?"

He peeked out of the bathroom. Duo leaned his back to the door. He was clearly exhausted.

"In here, Duo", he answered and Duo looked up, but didn't say anything more.

Wufei finished his glass of water and went back to the bedroom. Duo had dragged his own bed beside Wufei's. The long haired boy was sitting on the bed, looking at him. Wufei cocked his head to one side, looking at his comrade gently, hoping the other wouldn't recognize it.

"Can we keep the beds like this?" Duo asked.

Wufei climbed into his bed and slipped under the cover before he answered: "Just stay on your own side then."

And in the morning the Chinese pilot noticed that he was tangled in Duo's arms and hair. It was impossible to get up.
