Why hedge around the truth when it can be said in a much more straightforward manner? This was how Remus thought – lying, pretending and hesitance only made life more complicated. Which was why, on a rainy Sunday afternoon in the middle of October, Remus decided that it was only logical to go and talk to Sirius.
Only a few seconds before, he had been thinking about the very same man; one thought led to another and within minutes, Remus had realised that he was in love. He had not, of course, questioned this conclusion. After all, in such a situation, the only time in which he may have been unsure would have been if he was attempting to lie to himself to fall into a state of denial. Remus, very much a no-nonsense sort of man and emotionally hardened by the moon, had no time for such foolish insecurities and went straight to the most sensible solution.
There would be no fretting over rejection – after all, it would have been rude not to let someone know that they felt so strongly about them. Such a focused affection should never be held back, so Remus swung his legs off his bed and exited the seventh year boys' dormitory, heading down the stairs and fully intending to tell his best friend, Sirius Black, that he thought his arse was sexy, that he wanted to feed him mash potato at dinner and that he wanted to wake up beside him every morning.
"Finished that essay, Moony?" Sirius asked distractedly, without looking up, as Remus approached his intense chess game with James, Peter watching avidly on the side-lines. Remus quickly assessed the situation and recognised that, were he to speak – no matter the subject – no attention would have been paid, so he did the most logical thing that was sure to get Sirius' attention and enable them to have a focused discussion.
Just as Sirius was about to make his move again James, Remus bent to grip Sirius around the arm and haul him up. Without waiting to hear Sirius' surprised exclamations and miffed questions, which would have only wasted time and gave the words Remus wanted to say more time to jumble and confuse in his head, he leaned in and pressed his lips to his friend's. He kept the pressure soft – an indicator that he was being affectionate and was not acting on the hormonal whims of a teenage male.
The expression adorning Sirius' face was a mixture of several fleeting emotions, including surprise and pleasure, the latter of which caused a foreign warmth to spread rather pleasantly through Remus and lift the corners of his mouth into a content smile.
"Took you long enough." Sirius smiled gently, ignoring the stares, whispers and giggles of the other occupants of the common room in his typical carefree attitude that matched Remus' straightforward nature oddly well. Remus frowned, his brow furrowing as he thought back.
"But it only took me approximately three minutes and forty seconds to comprehend my emotions."
