Rory Williams didn't need a room in an alien prison hotel to tell him what his greatest fear was. His naturally paranoid mind delivered such scenarios to him daily. Every day, every night, plaguing his dreams and his thoughts. Although, in retrospect, it was quite obvious. What else could it ever have been?
He didn't hate the Doctor. No, not at all. But that didn't mean that he didn't envy him. That innate sense of worthlessness that had followed him all his life was only ever aggravated by the Doctor's presence.
Friend, not boyfriend. Nurse, not doctor. Rory, not the Raggedy Doctor. Not her Raggedy Doctor, anyway.
...
Her body wraps itself around him, hands in his hair, legs around his waist, tongue exploring the roof of his mouth.
"I - always - preferred - you," she mutters between kisses. He responds by suggestively toying with the buttons of her blouse.
They fall onto the bed, moaning, panting, caressing.
"I love you, Amy Pond."
"I love you, too, Doctor."
And Rory stands in the shadows with silent tears slipping down his cheek.
...
His attempts at wiping away the salty evidence of his dream arouse the sleeping redhead nestled neatly in the crook of his arm. He smiles weakly as she looks up in confusion.
"It's three in the bloody morning, mister. You'd better have a damn good reason for waking me up."
"Nothing," he mutters. "I just- I love you," he blurts out. She rolls her eyes.
"Yeah, I know, stupid face. We made a baby together, remember?" She snuggles closer to him, curling up against his chest. But just as she closes her eyes, she whispers into his ear, "I love you, too, Rory Pond."
"That's not the way it works!" he protests.
"Shut up and kiss me."
And so he does.
