Disclaimer I wish I owned Criminal Minds. This way, AJ would still have her job. Anyway.

Ch1

This is it.

She had to make a decision.

She pulled her right arm up, bringing the gun with her.

On her left side, Amy Miller stood shaking. She was just another innocent victim. The poor girl couldn't be more than eight years old.

Oh her right side stood the last person she wanted to see in that position.

She remembers the first time she met him. She had just left the FBI academy when she was recruited by the BAU. She, of course, had been thrilled.

She had heard a lot about the man who was going to be her boss. Before she met him, she had a feeling she would like to work with him. Six years later, she knew she had been right at the time.

His place was beside her, not in front of the gun she was currently holding.

His eyes were focused on her.

In a life-and-death situation – this could definitely be described as one – it's normal for people to panic, to fear for their lifes. Some even say they feel a rush of emotions; accompanied with memories of their loved ones.

But not him.

He wasn't scared. No.

He trusted her with his life. Ironic, seeing as she could just end his without as much as a blink of the eyes.

It wasn't a secret she was the best shooter of the entire FBI. He knew that if she decided to save Amy's life, he would end up with a bullet right in between his eyes.

Because she never missed.

She was usually pretty good in stressful situations – something that came in hand in her line of job – but this one was an exception. She didn't know what to say, do or think.

They say things happen for a reason.

But do they, really?

She thought about the nightmares she had after she killed the man that shot her best friend. Those were nothing compared to the ones she would have if she killed Amy. Or worse, if she killed him. How would the team react? They'd certainly blame her. And what about his son? He already lost his mother and now—now, she would be the one responsible for taking his father0s life.

No. She couldn't- she wouldn't be able to live with that.

Her thoughts were interrupted by the same voice that had been terrorizing them for the past 10 hours.

"It's time for you to make your decision, Agent Jareau. The girl, or Agent Hotchner."

JJ risked a glance at Hotch.

His eyes told her he was okay with whatever she decided. He wouldn't blame her. How could he, really?

JJ took a deep breath and aimed the gun at Amy.

The girl started trembling again.

She couldn't.

Looking at Hotch, she mouthed I'm sorry.

A lonely tear fell from her left eye.

JJ closed her eyes and aimed.

BAM

And then, nothing.
