TREASURE HUNTERS

"Good show, old mum," Jonathan exclaimed when Evie managed to open the locked door
that lead inside the tomb.
Evie rolled her eyes, as did Rick. Alex laughed.
Even though Alex loved Egypt and it's secrets as much as his mum, he was still a kid,
and Jonathan made these expedition interesting when he wasn't allowed to follow his
parents down.
Rick pushed open the unlocked door and stepped inside with his torch, so that he could
see.
"You know, Evie, I'm getting real sick of cobwebs," he muttered as he brushed aside one
from his face.
"A minor detail in exploring," Evie said absently as she studied the room. It wasn't
completely empty, like the last one Alex thought. At least there would be a little bit of
exploring here.
As soon as Evie found a door towards the back of the tomb, she turned to Alex. "Be
good, and stay here." He nodded, knowing that arguing got him nowhere with his mother.
And Evie turned to Jonathan, who had paled at the site of a door going underground. "You
coming, Jonathan?" she asked.
"Well, umm, what if someone comes along, they could hurt poor Alex, and, umm, maybe
I should stay here and, ahh, watch guard…" Jonathan spluttered. It didn't matter anyway.
Rick was already out of sight through the door, and Evie was on her way to join him.
Jonathan slumped down next to Alex on the floor. "Phew," he said wiping sweat of his
face. "I'm glad it's not me going down there. All those scorpions, spiders, dead and rotting
bodies…" he took a sip from his bottle of whisky that he'd brought along.
"There could be treasure," Alex said, trying to sound innocent. He knew his uncle would
be ready for anything if it involved treasure.
"You really think so? Treasure? In a dump like this?" Alex was right. Jonathan's eyes had
lit up like candles in pitch black.
"Well this is a tomb, isn't it?" Alex said. "When people died, they used to bury them with
their most important possessions. Most of the time, people who got buried in tombs at
least had some possession of gold." Jonathan's eyes went wild again. Alex continued. "And
think about it, Uncle Jon, this is a pretty big tomb. There could be treasure."
That set Jonathan off. "Well, come on then. Your parents will be down there until they
release another curse on us again. This time I'd like to come out of it with treasure.
Again," Jonathan said. The last bit was remembrance of the little solid gold pyramid he
managed to snatch from the top of the Scorpion King's Pyramid.
Alex laughed as his uncle started snooping around looking for more doorways.
Meanwhile Alex looked at the contents of the room, waiting for his uncle to give up in
frustration.
But he didn't, because, as soon as Alex started to translate a little piece of pottery,
Jonathan called out in an emensely happy voice.
"By, Jove, Alex. Come look at this. I've found treasure!"
