baby, our relationship sure is an intoxicating game of tag.

The girl with the blonde hair and sunglasses was sly, however much her friendly personality and easygoing demeanor said otherwise. Calem had learned it all too well; more than once he had gazed longingly at her, at soft curves and gray eyes that held unknown depths. Even though the subject of his such attentions was Serena, his best friend for years, he still had much to learn about her, as she didn't give away much easily.
She was a sneaky one—despite her modest red skirt and long, obscuring socks, once in a while, Calem managed to spot a mischievous glint in the girl's eyes, or a hard-to-catch flirtatious smile, or a day when she wore a skirt that was shorter than usual, showing off more of her slender legs. She was a subtle girl, always transient, often playing tag with the boy. Catch me if you can! Serena would flounce away, and he was left chasing after her in vain.
That was, really, the story of their relationship. It was all a game of chase, in which Calem couldn't stop himself from following her; he sure couldn't keep up. Her very presence drew him in; she'd tease him that way. She would show off, lure him into her intoxicating spell, and then dart away with a smirk and a playful grin. The girl was as elusive as a fox, escaping his every advance. There was no doubt about it, she played hard to catch.
Sometimes, Serena infuriated him like no other. From time to time, she would poke fun at the hopelessness of the boy's situation. They'd be sitting at a café with Trevor and Shauna and Tierno, and she would be sitting across him at the other side of the table, her strawberry blonde hair lush and flowing, looking as beautiful as ever. And Calem would just gawk, and stare.
Gosh, this was so impossible. What a mess he was over her.
It's not that hard, Trevor had said when giving him advice. You're just making it difficult on yourself. At the time, Calem had been doubtful, but he soon turned fourteen and with that came the courage to ask Serena on a date. He was on top of the world, that day. She accepted casually, calmly, but he could catch the sparkle in her eyes that arose.
In the game of tag that was their relationship, he was catching up. She was still far in the distance, but getting closer and closer with every season, every opportunity. He knew her tricks, her ways more than ever. Even though he still couldn't stop himself from falling to her (gorgeous) traps, he could spot them from a while away.
Later down the road, he was sixteen and it was Serena's sixteenth birthday; it was the day Shauna was giving them their first pokémon to celebrate. They were at the café, waiting eagerly for their friend to arrive with the pokémon, sharing the same seat—she sure wasn't sitting across the table from him now. Calem reached out and intertwined their fingers, and delighted at the fact that the girl didn't resist.
As they waited in a comfortable silence, the boy suddenly had an urge. On a whim, he moved closer, turned her chin to face his, and leaned in. Seconds later they were kissing full-on.
And as Calem's hand slipped through that soft blonde hair, he couldn't help but think that Trevor was right, and the vixen was easier to catch than he'd ever thought.
