The bullpen was nearly empty. The low hum of abandoned computers dulled the silence. Files were sloppily strewn across desktops, pens and pencils scattered in their midst. Mugs filled with cold coffee could be seen on the table in the break room. Clearly, everyone was perfectly content to rush out for the weekend.
Kate sat at her desk, thinking. One of the few individuals left in the precinct.
She didn't want anyone to feel uncomfortable.
That's what she told him. And she truly meant it. It was hard for her, trying to keep up a good rapport with Castle while dating Tom. There was this feeling in her stomach that just kept poking whenever she was alone with either one of them.
So, she kept one out of all thoughts and conversation when she was with the other – because she didn't want anyone to feel uncomfortable.
But surprise, surprise! Just like in every other relationship she had had, her efforts blew up in her face.
Castle had left with his ex, Demming, most likely, escaped to his beach house, and her friends had reluctantly bid their goodbyes before heading home for the holiday weekend.
And she was the one left uncomfortable.
