Eve watched as the sky filled with color and slowly went back to the stars that shined. She set down the book she was reading and sighed. It had been such a long day full of what felt like the same daily activities. She missed the road and the laughter that came with it. She missed her friends and the nights she spent with them. Most of all, she missed him.

She glanced at the clock, wondering where he was. She understood when it came to traveling how a time could become later, but he had promised to be home in time. They watched every year under the same tree and she ached for him to hold her.

A few feet away, their dog looked up tiredly, as if he had read her mind. He was waiting for his father and waiting for excitement. Eve got up, her back hurting as she walked toward the door, looking for his car. Defeated when she did not see it, she decided to watch the TV for a while.

It felt as if nothing entertaining was on. Annoyed, she turned the TV off and walked back into the kitchen, looking at the clock again. Eve sighed and looked at the sky. A pink one exploded into the night, followed by a green, loud one. She opened the door to the distant smell of a barbeque and suddenly, the dinner she had a few hours earlier didn't seem filling anymore.

She could hear music blasting in the distance, the song upbeat and exciting. She ached for excitement. Any excitement she had left when she was told she couldn't be on the road anymore, it wasn't safe. Eve slowly sat down, watching the sky with a smile. She wasn't supposed to be alone.

As if he heard her, firm and reassuring arms wrapped around her. Eve looked up to see his tired eyes and felt herself smile. "You're home," she whispered as he kissed her. "I didn't think you would be able to watch with me."

"My flight was canceled early this morning and I couldn't find another flight that would get me here," he explained. "I found a car and I drove."

Eve felt her heart jump. "You drove?"

He nodded. "I couldn't let you watch the fireworks alone."

He walked toward her. His eyes fell to her stomach and he smiled. He helped her up and they walked over to the tree, sitting under it. He put his arms around her and the moment felt perfect. There was a loud crash and the sky exploded with color. Eve went to look at him and he kissed her.

Eve smiled. "I love you, Matt."

"I love you," he whispered.
