Life would be so much easier if he meant nothing to her.
Lady Marian sighed wistfully, grave blue eyes looking down at her clumsy, tiresome, needle work.
That smile.
That perfect smile. So gentle, so warm. That remarkable curve of his rosy lips that made her heart ache.
Her soul crack.
Who would have thought he was a killer?
A monster?
"If only …" the maiden whispered.
She blinked.
"If only things were different … If only Robin was not … If only."
Her lips parted as she forgot about her needle work, recollecting the snug warmth of his slender, strong body as he held her in his arms, avowing to protect her, care for her, the firm yet loving caress of his long fingers as they combed through her hair, the potent aroma of horse, leather and lavender.
She touched her fingers to her parted lips, closing her eyes.
Those arms, those lips, that smile …
So painful.
