He didn't want to. No, actually not at all. But as a boy from District One he was required to, train, murder, and quite possibly die.
You were beaten until you got your goal done in training. Eventually, all those beatings and his parents hating him and wishing he were as good as his brothers got to him.
One day he lost that small twinkle in his eye. The next day he could skewer a dummy with a spear with out a twinge of guilt for thinking that this is the fate a human would have at his hands. The next week he learned hand to hand combat.
Several months later he finally lost all humanity in him, but not by choice. The only time Marvel seemed human was when he was around his little sickly sister.
At 18 he was ready to go into the arena, if not a little excited. But deep down inside he never wanted to be in there.
He was a beast, an animal but not quite. He had never killed a human yet. Firegirl fascinated him, as did lover boy and so did the small girl tribute from 11. But he thought he shouldn't dwell on stupid things like love and sacrificing himself.
Running, as he heard something screaming, caught in his trap. Someone he thought not something. He heard a young girl scream "Katniss, Katniss." With spear in hand he hurdled it not realizing it was the 12 year old from 11, Rue. He knew if he survived the games this would haunt him for the rest of his life.
He barely had time to register shock before he saw Katniss, yes Firegirl shoot him straight in the center of his neck.
He staggers, drunkenly before pulling out the arrow. He knows Rue will die as the wound was fatal. He feels true sorrow. Children had to grow up to fast in his world. Murderers before they were adults.
He musters up his strength and manages to whisper "I'm sorry." But he doesn't think Katniss will hear him. For he is drowning in his own blood and bloody gurgles is all that he feels is being registered. He faintly hears a big boom before the world turns black.
As he journeys to the land of the deceased, he catches glimpses of the future. Katniss and Peeta as he should call them win the games. Then participate in another horrible bloody game of death with surviving victors.
There is a rebellion; one he wishes he could have been part of. The rebels win Katniss stays true to their mocking nickname "Firegirl." And "The Girl on Fire." And defeats the two dictators Snow and Coin.
Panem abolishes the Hunger Games but he then sees that no one truly wins. He can see his death horrifies her but, he knows that fate chose correctly. Letting her win and Peeta. He is glad lover boy is there to comfort her as she thrashes around haunted by nightmares.
The others will join him soon. He feels a sigh of relief. Now he is as free as a bird just a bright, happy, young boy. Laughter, joy, and freedom are all he feels not weighed down by the responsibility of winning.
I should know because I was that boy. I was Marvel, the Boy With the Spear.
