Disclaimer: I don't own Harry Potter. Never have Never will. I only own the plot and new characters.
I am officially back. Life turned me away from my writing for a very long time. However I remembered this story a few weeks ago and have gone back through, edited and changed it all. I am chapters ahead of what was ever published and will be publishing one chapter a week.
Hopefully it lives up to expectations.
Chapter one
The End of a Beginning
Ten years ago
The lightning clashed against the sky illuminating a face off between an old man with a long wispy white beard dressed in a deep burgundy robe and a young woman who wore her own of shimmering silver, which only annunciated her raven black hair and pale white features. They stood on opposite sides of the room, both backs straight and without an ounce of fear, though all they had to defend themselves against the other was a wooden stick; which each had pointed at the others heart. The old man had a team of men behind him, their wands also pointed at the lady, while she stood alone.
"I said no! She's my daughter. You can't take her as well. As i have said, i will not allow it. You know what happened last time you tried to interfere, i promise it will be worse this time. You took my husband, I will not allow you to take my child too. Please! Don't punish her! Don't tear her life apart. She's done nothing to you. Don't take her away from the only love she has ever known," The women, Jennifer, half refused, with rage burning in her eyes, and half begged, her shoulders slumping slightly with her last words.
She knew it was useless, she was outnumbered and one way or another they would succeed with getting what they had wanted and tried countless times for the last three years to get. Somehow they had found them, somehow they had got past all the failsafes she had put in place to ensure her daughter's safety from those who threatened their very livelihood. Oh how she hated them, all of them. They only believed that their way was right and refused to see it from another's perspective. They refused to see that not everything was black and white. They had always been against her husband and her ways. They all supported that Potter boy, worshiped him yet he had done nothing to show great power. They all talked about how sad it was for him to be orphaned yet here they were, trying to do the same thing to her daughter.
"Jennifer-" The man started but she interrupted.
"It's Mrs Riddle to you. You lost my trust long ago Dumbledore. You along with most of those who pull the puppet strings in the magical world. You have no right being in my house," Anger shook her normally steady voice and her arm flicked slightly, as though she was trying to hold herself back from using her magic to cast them out.
"Mrs Riddle then. Please calm yourself. We told you this time would come. It's took us longer to track you than we thought it would. I will say your wards are some of the strongest i have ever seen." He inclined his head to show appreciation and recognition of her abilities. "But alas, it is time to let Amelia go as the Ministry has ordered. She will have a chance to live a normal life without all this hassle, without being isolated from her peers. She will have a guaranteed future, a safe one. Something which you can not provide her," He didn't add that she would have another identity, no memory of her mother or the life she was living. That was not something a mother who was being forced to hand over her child needed to hear.
"Perhaps you misunderstood me Albus. I said no! Haven't you and your people caused enough damage? Her uncle turned on us, my own brother turned on me and all he believed because of you. Don't you understand?" It was clear that Jennifer would not go down without a fight.
"It was your brothers choice. Not mine or anyone else's. Your husband allowed a person he cared deeply for to die. I noticed that despite his defection it has not stopped you allowing Ami to see him on occasion, he still has access through your wards?" Dumbledore questioned.
"And still a traitor through and through I see. Since I believe it was him you got your information from," At Dumbledore's silence, Jennifer's anger seemed to grow, her hair almost crackling from the rage. "I let him come back because he is family. My daughter has an Uncle, one i wish for her to know. Clearly i see i made a mistake, based on an emotion that brings only trouble. Love Dumbledore, isn't that your answer to everything? Now you must understand that it is not the strongest force because if it was how could my own brother betray me? Betray us?" Jennifer's voice rose to a screeching that should not have been discernable to the human ear. She breathed deeply and flashed a bright smile. "Leave Professor," She spat, "Leave and I assure you I will make sure my brothers death is quick, as will yours be when it is time."
A ruffle of footsteps was heard on the stairs though none in the room took any notice, so enraptured were they with the battle occurring between the Lady of Darkness and the Leader of the light.
"Mother, What's going on? Who are these people?" A small six-year-old girl questioned. She had wandered from her room into the main hall after being awoken from her mother's yelling. Even if one was not aware of whose house they were in, none would ever doubt whose daughter they stood before. She wore a emerald green nightgown, a silver snake embroidered on it, which slithered around and silently hissed with its forked tongue, and she was holding a soft toy that was a perfect replica of a dragon with icy blue eyes in her arms. It even flexed its wings and reared as half the men turned their wands towards her.
"Amelia, what are you doing out of bed? Come here! Will you lower your wands or point them somewhere else, what's a unarmed girl going to do? I swear if any of you so much let off sparks you will be dead before they disappear," Jennifer held out one arm while keeping her wand arm steadily trained on Dumbledore. The young daughter ran to her and allowed herself to be swept into her mother's arms before she surveyed the scene she had walked in on. As her eyes landed on the elderly gentleman she let out a gasp of shock.
"What are you doing here? You're the scary man. With the twinkling eyes. The one that wants to take me. You're scary and mean and twinkly! " The young girl exclaimed her eyes suddenly ablaze, both with terror and fury.
"Ami! Don't speak like that." Jennifer scolded her daughter, the Auror's and Dumbledore forgotten for the moment. "Remember darling, the key to power is to speak your power, not to disgrace yourself with foul words."
"But Mother. They're not nice people and they tried to hurt us." Ami complained. Jennifer started to explain to Ami why she couldn't say those things when they were around but Dumbledore interrupted.
"Jennifer," Was all he said while giving her a stern look. "It is time!"
She sighed, playing defeated while gripping her daughter tightly moving her around on her hip so she was half shielded from the men. She wanted what was best for her daughter and she knew that if she grew up with the Riddle name many would shun her and she would never have a normal lifestyle. But she didn't want her to go, Ami was the daughter of the most powerful wizard seen in a long time, and she was no mediocre witch either. Together they had created a child that needed unique tutoring. The kind she could only get from those who sought her best interest. Her family. She would not allow anyone else to use her gifts for their own advantage, which is what would happen once she was old enough for them to understand.
"Do you not understand what you are asking me? You are asking a mother to hand her own child over to the enemy," Dumbledore opened his mouth to argue but she promptly cut him off. "You are the enemy, don't even argue that point with me. You were trying to destroy my husband and all we stood for long before Amelia was born. Do not think I am foolish enough to believe that you would not manipulate and twist her against us. For the greater good of course! That was always your motto, was it not?"
"I'm not going with them!" Amelia exclaimed, struggling in her mother's tight grip to turn and face the man her mother was spitting venom at. "You can't take me. I won't go. I won't."
"Hand her over Jennifer and I promise you, you will be able to see her when she attends Hogwarts. Under supervised visits. Give her a chance to be normal. Do you not owe her that?"
"I owe-" Jennifer was cut off as a strand of purple light flew towards her and her child. She managed to form a shield, the spell bounced off and split into six, each targeting a separate man.
"No," Dumbledore's voice rang clear, his own shield absorbing the magic. "I said there is to be no conflict tonight. Paddington, lower your wand."
"We will be here all night at this rate Dumbledore. The only way is to take her by force and you know it. So let's stop this chit chat and get on with it. I have my own children to get to," Rolf Paddington glared at the dark lady.
"If you want her, come and get her," Jennifer let out a final taunt before swishing her wand in a complicated movement while whispering In Amis ear.
The room fell into darkness and the very floor they all stood on began to shake and then concave on itself. The men barely had a chance to protect themselves from falling into the deep hole that had appeared, let alone retaliate to the women's goading.
"Lumos maxima!" Dumbledore illuminated the room. The aurors steadied themselves and glanced round. The witch and the child were gone. "Spread out and search. They can't have left the building. No lethal force, just get Amelia."
Meanwhile Jennifer locked the door to her daughter's room and gently placed Amelia on the bed. She knew there was no escaping what was to come, but she already vowed her vengeance against all involved, starting with that meddling old fool and ending with her brother.
"Amelia, those men are going to come in here and they are going to take you. They are going to try to tell you that your father and I were bad people. Whatever happens, you must not show them your gifts. No matter what! Promise me you'll remember that," Jennifer exclaimed, silent tears falling as she held her daughter close and rocked her.
"I promise I won't mother. I promise. Please Don't cry. I don't want to go. I want to stay here with you. Please don't let them take me," the young girl clung to her mother.
"I'm sorry baby, we have no choice. There's no time to call in your uncles. They are coming and they will find us," she could already here doors being opened and closed just down the hall. "Remember what your father and I taught you. Don't forget it and don't use your powers. No matter what. Keep control. Don't tell anyone what you are" Jennifer whispered so only Ami would hear.
She nodded into her mother's shoulder. "Can I say bye to Uncle Sev and Uncle Luc and Aunty Cissa and Pansy and Blaise and Drake. Please? Cause otherwise they'll worry,," she gazed up at her mother with innocence shining in her eyes, even as the tears fell. She knew if her mother was telling her that they would take her, then they would.
"There's not enough time. But I promise we will come for you soon. We will find you and we will bring you home" the door rattled and a yell sounded out. " whatever happens next do not get involved, do not use your powers. I will be okay. I love you Amelia and I swear this won't be for long. "
"I love you too mother," the wood of the door began to splinter as mother kissed her child's forehead but Ami only clung tighter. Fear shining in her eyes. "Please don't let the take me. Please! I don't want to go with them."
Jennifer pulled her daughter's hands from her and quickly stood moving out of reach. The tears streamed but she made a final decision and shot a stunner at her daughter. The look of terrified innocence still on her face.
"I am sorry my daughter, but they can't know what you can do and you are too young to control it. I promise I will make this right. "
She closed her eyes for a brief moment till she heard the door give way. She then fought, knowing it was futile. There were too many. But they would not take what was hers easily.
As Dumbledore joined they frey, Jennifer had a final thought of how this would be his biggest mistake and how she would get back what was hers no matter the cost. A mix of love for her daughter and husband and the coldest vengeance filled her heart before she was struck with multiple stunners and her world turned black.
Later that same night
"Keep everything hidden from her until further notice. I have put a memory charm on her as well as an identification spell and given her new memories but if too many things are mentioned she may remember her old life which will put her in harm's way." Professor Dumbledore finished telling the young muggle couple who were now the legal parents of Amelia Fenella Wakanda Eldora Lydia Riddle.
"We will look after her like she is our own. Thank-you, you have given us more than we could have wished for." Dr. Luke Granger told the man staring at the sleeping girl in his wife's arms.
"No thank-you. You may have saved a girl from growing up corrupted. Read over the letter if you need anything or have any questions. If it's a matter of severe importance send an owl. Otherwise we must inforce top secrecy. They will be searching but she can not be found!"
He went to walk away before turning back to them at their call.
"Thank you Albus. You can not understand what this gift means to us. Would you like to know her new name?" Melissa the mother asked.
He stopped to think for a moment before smiling and his eyes twinkling.
"You are most welcome. Yes, what is the child's new name?"
"Hermione, Hermione Jean Granger." Luke replied.
The old man nodded in approval, a soft smile gracing his face. Hermione was a fitting name, a very muggle name. A name no one would associate with the Riddle heir. With a swish of his cloak and a crack he disappeared. Leaving the parent's to celebrate their gift.
Their new life.
Their daughter.
Ten years later
"Happy to be back?" Harry asked his girlfriend, wrapping his arms around her from behind.
"Very happy. I've missed you Harry," Hermione sighed leaning back into him her head resting on his shoulder. Hermione had been in New Zealand for the holidays and hadn't been able to spend much time with Harry or the rest of their friends, though she did make the occasional trip with the Knight Bus.
"I think I'm gonna' be sick. Ow!" Ron exclaimed looking at his two best friends. The Golden trio stood staring at the front of the castle. Ron's Ravenclaw girlfriend Luna was with them.
"You had a wracksprat in your ear," Luna stated as Ron rubbed his ear. Hermione and Harry exchanged looks and held back their laughter.
"Come on guys, let's enjoy the feast, it's our last one." the boys followed Hermione's lead and started up the stairs, though both kept a wary eye on Ginny and Dean to make sure they didn't sneak off from the feast like last year, for their own private one.
The girls rolled their eyes when they spotted this and started a conversation about their own sortings.
"I'll see you tomorrow before class?" Luna gave Ron a quick kiss and scuttled off to sit with her Ravenclaw friends. Ron stared at her longingly.
"Come on Ron," Harry shook his head and pulled the red haired man by the arm, exchanging another humour filled look with Hermione.
They settled down at their Gryffindor table, Hermione seated across from Harry and Ron and just chatted for a while. The subject soon turned to Quidditch and Hermione felt her eyes wandering. They fell upon the Slytherin Prince and she couldn't help but notice how attractive he had become. She mentally shook herself. It was Malfoy, nothing attractive about a ferret . He turned at the heat of her gaze and their eyes connected.
Flash
A young girl and boy stood together under a tree.
"Aim's I will never leave you. Nothing will ever hurt you when I'm around. No matter what." They young boy told her staring into her eyes.
"You promise?" She questioned biting her lip.
"For forever," He promised. "Your family," he stated causing the young girl to throw her arms around his neck.
Two women watched from a yonder window as the boy and girl climbed up to the tree house above, where two of their friends awaited them. Young love, it seemed, had started.
Flash
Hermione's face drained of colour and she quickly looked away. What just happened? Who were they? Why did I see them?
"Mione you okay?" A voice interrupted her thoughts. She took her gaze from her plate and looked at her boyfriend.
"Huh? Um …Yeah I'm …I'm fine," Harry looked at her carefully but put his suspicions aside.
Meanwhile at the Slytherin table
Draco Malfoy was swarmed with a few girls from his fan club. He pushed a blonde fourth year away from him and looked at Blaise and Pansy for help.
"Oh Drakie." Pansy moved closer to Draco and cuddled up to him while sending a wink at Blaise. He smirked back at her. The girls grumbled and slowly moved away. As soon as they were out of sight Pansy sat up and moved back towards her boyfriend Blaise.
"Thanks Pans. I owe you," Draco thanked her.
"You owe me, playing the clingy girlfriend is so tedious." Pansy drawled but with a hint of a smile, against most people's beliefs Draco and Pansy were only friends. Best friends in fact. Had been their entire lives, as had Blaise, she just helped keep the girls, the ones that would never be able to fill the expectations of a Malfoy wife away.
Draco felt someone watching him. He turned and his eyes connected with Grangers. He watched as her mouth fell open before she grew pale and broke the gaze.
The feast started and though both ate their fill and chattered with their peers, neither the Slytherin Sex God or the Goody-good Gryffindor could forget what the had seen.
