A/N: Completely random idea - but I suppose it could work…

Rose looked at it with a mixture of shock, happiness, partly hidden amusement and a good deal of embarrassment.

She turned the instantly recognisable white tube over in her hand, and looked up at the slightly nervous, rather proud Doctor, who had presented it to her only seconds ago.

What could she say to this?

"Doctor, what's this?"

Well, that was a good start…

She watched the shift of emotions on his face, as nervousness was replaced instantly by enthusiasm.

"It's a sonic screwdriver! You get into so much trouble that I thought you might as well have one. Comes in handy, really."

He snatched it, expertly manoeuvred it and extended it, showing her the blue light perched neatly on the end.

"So, what do you think then?"

Damn those eyes, she cursed. For a 900-year-old alien, he still looked in his thirties, and had the enthusiasm of a five-year old. He had a pair of the most beautiful brown eyes she had ever seen, filled with eagerness, a love for life and a certain childish energy that she could only wish she had, knowing that even when she was five, she didn't possess it. Normally, there was a small hint of the horrors he had seen and faced in his lifetimes in those sparkling orb, but now, for probably a short time, it was gone, not evident in their depths…

Recognising dangerous territory when she saw it, she veered off that train of thought, still looking deep into his eyes and wishing that she wasn't…they always made her go a bit weak in the knees…

"Is there something wrong?" He asked, now looking slightly more downbeat.

She cursed again. Mentally. She didn't think swearing in his face would gain her any favour with the alien in front of her, and she allowed her thoughts to veer off again.

'Stop looking into his eyes!'

'But they're so nice…'

'Snap out of it, Rose! You're nineteen years old, for God's sake! Get a grip!'

"No…not at all. It's great, Doctor. Really…"

"But?"

She didn't think that either blushing or bursting into hysterical laughter would help, so, gaining a self-control she never knew she had let alone used before, she fought off both urges, and manage to speak in an off-hand voice that sure as hell didn't reflect what she was really feeling at the moment.

"Doctor…I mean this in the nicest way, of course, but how did you ever come up with the idea to create a sonic screwdriver from a tampon?"

His face screwed up slightly as he thought about what she said.

"What's a tampon? Oh, that thing? I just thought it was something you women carried around with you…less conspicuous and all that. Why, what does it do? What do you use it for? Where do you put it, anyways? I've never seen women parade them about like they do with clothes and jewellery…"

Self-control was being tested to the edge of its capacity, but Rose Tyler had not been chosen as the Doctor's companion for nothing, and a sudden inspiration struck her like a bolt of lightning, causing her to suddenly break into a wide, wicked grin that, to be honest, frightened him a bit, even if he would never admit it. It always meant something bad, for him, was coming.

"Well, let's put it this way, Doctor…if I'm ever a prisoner in some distant place in the universe, I'll have somewhere very safe to put it…"

Don't ask about where this came from…I have no idea, myself. It just came to me, I guess.
