A/N October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. This story is being posted to remind people of that fact as allegedly that is the disease that is supposed to have claimed Mike Stone's wife while Jeannie was a young teen. Thanks to Briroch for checking this story over for me.

Dry Your Eyes

Her world was ending. It felt as simple as that.

Jeannie and Mike Stone were at the hospital where Helen Stone had just died. Both were heartbroken and Jeannie's tears would not stop flowing. Her mother had been her confidante, her best friend other than her dad and the light of both of their lives.

The days and weeks and yes even months and years ahead would prove to be difficult for both Mike and Jeannie Stone.

Mike had lost his soul mate, the only woman he had ever cherished and who would have his heart for eternity. Now he had to find the strength within to help his daughter through this terrible time they both faced.

By the time they had returned home, Mike had found his voice to speak with Jeannie. He had tried to sort through all the thoughts on their way from the hospital. Words he knew might at least offer his daughter some comfort for he knew there was no way to totally take away the pain.

"Jeannie, I know it is going to be a rough go without your mom here. She is...was the best lady I have ever known in my life. She is living on through you, all you do in life will be her accomplishments as well as your own and mine. She will be there with you, each minute of every day and will be like your guardian angel in a way. I know she won't be able to be here with us in the physical sense as we wish she could but she will always be here in our hearts and thoughts." Mike tried to keep the anguish from his voice.

"I wish she was here, daddy. She was a good person why did it have to be her? I don't understand! There are all these bad people running around still alive and mom is gone. If anyone deserved to live it was her." Jeannie exclaimed passionately.

"I know, sweetheart. Remember the things that your mom loved so much and I think when you see them, well that will be her saying I am still here. I have not really gone anywhere I am with you and your dad even now." Mike spoke quietly.

The days that followed Jeannie's head was filled with her father's words. As well, her mother's voice filled her thoughts and things she had said to Jeannie started to be of some comfort to Jeannie. The day of the funeral came and the angels cried (rain came, in other words) Mike and Jeannie were surprised to see an unusual sight.

Even though she was not a police officer of any kind, there had been arranged a special honor guard at Mike Stone's wife's funeral. Mike and Jeannie both were very touched by this show of support from SFPD. Little did they know that one of the officers in the honor guard that had caught Jeannie's eye would one day become Mike Stone's partner and one of the family.

Yes, on the day of her mom's funeral Jeannie, for the first time, had seen a young officer by the name of Steve Keller.

Near the end of the ceremony at the cemetery, Jeannie happened to glance skyward and saw a rainbow. The sight of it brought a small smile to her face and she pointed it out to Mike who smiled, too. A rainbow had been one of Helen Stone's favorite things to look at, so both took it as a sign that she was there with them.

After she lowered her eyes again, Mike heard Jeannie utter something almost under her breath.

"Thanks, Mom. We miss you and we love you." Jeannie said softly.
