Amita woke, realizing that the nausea that had bothered her every morning for the past month was gone. She smiled and snuggled down further into the comforter. The scent of eggs and sausages cooking didn't even faze her. Eggs and sausages? She reached over to her husband's side of the bed, but it was vacant and cold. "Charlie?" she said, opening her eyes.
Roses. A crystal vase with at least a dozen white roses stood on her nightstand. A card leaned against the vase, her name scrawled on the outside of the envelope. She reached for the card just as the door opened. "Happy Mother's Day!" Charlie said. "I didn't wake you, did I?" He stood in the doorway, holding a bed tray.
"No, you didn't. Ooh, that smells wonderful." He placed the tray across her lap. "Why are you doing this? I'm not a mother yet."
"I beg to differ," he said, placing his hand gently on her abdomen. "Our little friend told me I'd better be especially nice to you this Mother's Day."
"Oh, she did, did she?" Amita said, raising her eyebrows.
"HE said this was the last Mother's Day when it was just going to be the two of us, so I'd better make sure it's a special one." He waved a hand at the tray. "Orange juice, tea, French toast and sausages. He told me you love French toast."
"She was right." She poured warm maple syrup over the stack and cut a piece with her fork. She met his eyes as she chewed. "Mmmmm. You're a very good cook." She reached up and caressed his stubbly cheek. "I love a man who can cook."
"I thought you love a man who can do math."
She ran her hand down his arm and lifted his hand to her lips. She kissed each one of his knuckles and murmured, "I'm lucky to have a man who can do both. And so much more."
He caressed her cheek, leaned forward and kissed her. "After you finish your breakfast, I'll show you some of the amazing things I can do."
"I was hoping you would." She patted her belly. "She tells me you are going to make this a Mother's Day to remember."
