The Stormwalker Saga
Dedicated to Sophie

Dear diary,
I can't believe it! I got accepted into SW Legion 674! First, I'll tell you about the training. We learned how to pilot a Stormwalker. That was easy because dad taught me years ago! If only he were here to watch me. I skillfully navigated the course made of hay. I was finished before anybody else had even gone half way. Everyone was very impressed! I even saw the inspector hiding a grin in his mustache. After training, I heard two men whispering that I could be automatically placed as a co-pilot! I can't wait to be blasting Darwinists.

Dear diary,
This is it! My first battle! The sentries spotted a patrol of seppropods coming our way at 5 km. It may only be a skirmish, but it will be my first I'm going out with these men: commander: Hugo Akeman, a burly middle-aged man with a pointy mustache. Co- pilot: me. The 2 gunners are Adalbert Bauer and Dirk Hoffman. I wrote a letter in case I don't come back. Hopefully I will.
Oh, and this guy just said to me, "Your first battle, no matter how small on the big stage, makes you feel like a veteran."

Dear diary,
This entry is from the infirmary. I have seen the true horrors of war. I also feel as if I was a seasoned veteran, who weathered seasons of cold, hunger, defeat, and victory. Do you want me to tell you? It was horrible!
When we set out, the sky was as red as fire in the glow cast by the setting sun. The sound of the boilers humming soothed me like honey would. Our Stormwalker squadron strode forward in their wedge formation, kicking up dust in their wake. Suddenly, another Stormwalker, the Eagle Squadron leader radioed, "Serpies spotted 3 klicks away." "Prepare to engage." "Eagle 1 out."
"Roger" "Eagle 6 out," I radioed back.
"Load the cannons!" Hugo commanded.
I heard the clanks and clunks as they loaded the cannon.
Then, Eagle 2 radioed, "Serpies in cannon range, prepare to fire on my mark"
"Wait for it...Wait for it…Fire!"
Boom! Boom! Boom! The cannons went! Two Serpies went down in the initial barrage. Only 9 were left! Suddenly a shadow fell over us darkening the cabin.
Eagle 12 radioed, "Hydrogen breather! Retreat!"
It was too late. The aerial bombs were already falling. Flaming wreckages were already surrounding us. I saw a flaming body slam into the vision slit, which luckily was at half vision. I wanted to puke. However, above the chaos, literally, cling to the rigging of the hydrogen breather, was a girl! She even wore a standard issue midshipman's flight jacket! Since when did they let girls in the Air Service. Suddenly, shrapnel filled the cabin and everything went dark. The last thing I felt was a sharp pain in my leg. Oh, how I wish I could go home and never cast eyes on another Stormwalker in my life. I guess I'll have to survive the rest of my enlistment.
