"Brittany!" called Alvin from the living room.
I ran in there, "What?"
"Do you know what day today is?"
I paused for a brief moment, "No, what is it?"
"New Year's eve!" He said excitedly.
"Umm, what's that?" I asked curiously.
"Well, it's the day before the new year and we stay up until midnight. And when the clock strikes twelve we go outside and celebrate the new year!"
A wide smile grew on my face, "That sounds like fun!"
He grabbed my shoulders and spun me around, "It's almost as good as Christmas!"
I laughed, "But we get to stay up late?"
"EXACTLY!"
Dave walked into the room, "So, Alvin. I take it you're telling Brittany about New Years?"
We nodded simultaneously. Dave chuckled and walked off.
Alvin looked around and then nervously said, "Y-you know, there's another tradition that happens at midnight…"
"What is it?" I asked excitedly.
"Well… As soon as the clock strikes twelve you're supposed to-"
"ALVIN!" interrupted Simon. "Do you happen to know where my key chain went to?"
Alvin chuckled lightly and kept tilting his head towards me. "Oh… Well… never mind…"
XOXOXOXO
"Britt, come on! We're only an hour minutes away!" called Alvin from the other side of the door.
'ONLY an hour…' I thought to myself. "I'm coming, I'm coming."
As I stepped out he grumbled, "It's about time! Now, I told Dave that we're not coming to be joining him and the others tonight."
"Why'd you do that?" I asked baffled.
He took my paw into his, "We're having our own little party."
I smiled as he led me into the bedroom and then out onto the roof. A small golden blanket, with small snacks and a candle in the middle, was sprawled across the roof. We sat down next to each other and began to talk. "How'd you get Dave to let you do this?"
"I just asked."
I nodded my head unconvinced, "Hmm, mmm."
Fireworks began to shoot off in the distance. "Look how pretty, Alvin!"
"I know," he said looking at me.
I glanced down at him, "Why aren't you watching?"
"I am. I can see them in your eyes."
I smiled and blushed.
"You know… Brittany… Umm… I got something for you, to celebrate the new year."
He reached in his pocket and pulled out a golden chain with red and pink ribbons weaved into it. "You can wear it like a head band."
I smiled at him and took the gift, "It's beautiful, Alvin."
His cheeks turned red, "But not as beautiful as you."
My heart melted at his words and I leaned over and gave him a hug, which he accepted and returned another. "Thank you."
We sat in silence for a few minutes before he announced, "Look, ten seconds left!"
I looked over at the sky, every second a colorful number shot up in the sky. We could hear the chanting of the town, "3…2…1…"
As soon as the "Happy New Year" firework exploded I was taken into the embrace of Alvin. His lips to mine. I was shocked at first, but my eyes closed and I returned the kiss as my arms made their way to his shoulders.
When we pulled apart he whispered, "Happy New Year."
