"Hitsugaya-kun," a small girl came to a stop behind the leaving party.
"It's Hitsugaya-taicho," a white-haired boy reminded the girl exasperatedly as he strolled over to her; but for once this didn't bring a smile to her face. Tōshirō frowned and waited cautiously for her next words.
"You're leaving now?" she asked quietly, pulling her ivory shawl tighter around her frail frame.
"Yes," the word seemed to have so much meaning behind it and the two of them gazed at each other for several moments, as though they were frozen within a single instant of time.
"Hitsugaya-taicho," the illusion was shattered by the unusually soft tone of the 10th division's vice-captain.
"Yes, I'm coming," Tōshirō licked his lips as he tried to find a way to express everything he wanted the girl to know, but words failed him, "goodbye… Bedwetter Momo," he hesitated for a second before turning round to join his team.
"Come back," her voiced whispered like the wind and pleading eyes stared pitifully at the ground.
"Hinamori," the captain chided, "I must…" she shook her head vehemently, leaving the protests to die in his throat.
"Just… come back," she whispered brokenly, "Tōshirō, don't… don't leave me like… like… please; please don't die…" she tried to hold back the tears threatening to stream down her face, "…come home."
Tōshirō gazed at her in surprise for a few seconds, before his features softened and he stepped towards her. Quickly she lifted a hand to wipe away the tears welling past her eyelids, but he grabbed it in his own before she had a chance to. He stepped into her line of vision, for once taking advantage of his short stature, and lifted her face to meet his.
"For you, anything," he told her with a faint, teasing smile. She tried to smile back but it was rapidly lost within a small sob.
The white-haired shinigami pressed a kiss to her captured hand before smiling reassuringly and stepping away.
"I'll see you when I get back," he told the young demon arts expert, who held back another sob. Tōshirō flashed another smile and, after another minute hesitation, strode back to his solemnly waiting lieutenant.
Momo watched them leave her behind tearfully, but her heart felt lighter; Tōshirō never broke his promises.
