One
One: single, solitary, lone, individual
From the very beginning it was hard to know where one began and the other ended.
It was hard to know where one's own thoughts set out and who then brought them to a finish.
It was hard to see who had instigated the action and who had followed it through.
For, during that time, there were no boundaries. There were no definite lines that could be seen that could separate them into two different beings. There was nothing about them that wasn't one, that wasn't part of their whole.
But then she arrives and the lines begin to take shape…they become visible enough that even he, in his own self-delusioned world, can see them far too clearly. And, as those lines keep becoming more and more apparent, he realizes something.
Being one is also...being alone.
Now there is a choice that he has to make for them both, for Hikaru cannot see the lines that are forming around them, and he knows, he knows that there is only one choice that can be made.
He knows that this is right, building these barriers that are supporting the ever-revealing lines, but he cannot stop his heart from breaking. He cannot stop himself from wanting to tear down these damn walls that he so carefully built up. He cannot stop the need to drag his feet through the lines to scuff them over, blurring them once more.
…But he doesn't.
Instead, he hides his bruised and fracturing heart quietly and so deeply that even Hikaru can't see it, as he continues to help them become…not one anymore but rather…individual.
