Mistakes We Do Not Remember

by AngelSyn

It was a simple mistake, one that Lyon would not remember; his hand and sleeve barely brushed the top of the bottle, yet it fell on its side with a sharp clink of glass on hard wood, rolling in an arc spilling black, opaque ink which raced across burnished wood and soaked into parchment.

Rivulets fell off the edge of the desk and onto his lap before he could get away, the ink spreading across the deep indigo material of his robes more quickly than anyone would have expected.

Like a shadow devouring the expansive star-lit sky.

Instinctively Lyon tried to brush the stains off, but only came away with pale hands smeared in the liquid; it seemed no matter how he tried to stem the encroachment of murky ink, he only got more of it on him.

Even after, when the mess had been cleared away by the servants, the ink would not come out no matter how many times his robes were washed, even the brilliant gold filigree looked like tarnished metal, and so the only way was to burn them.

As for the smudges of ink on his hands, they eventually faded away after a few days, leaving his pale hands the same; pale and elegant.

But the next time, the next mistake, where Lyon would only just brush the darkness, the spill would be harder to clean from the continent of Magvel than the polished desk, and the spread of shadow devouring his innocent star-lit soul would have the same fate as those soiled robes, burned in the holy fire of a sacred stone.

The next time, the darkness would not fade away.

Lyon would never forget.
