A/N: This is short and sweet which I seem to be a lot better at writing, so I hope you enjoy!
She picks up her bag, throws open the door and leaves. The pain of leaving feels worse than when she was shot in the heart. Seeing the horror in her partner's eyes as she laid in the cemetery grass pleading for her to stay seemed more bearable than the devastation in her husband's eyes as she willingly left. Kate pauses in the hallway outside the loft, her heart being yanked in the opposite direction by the love and devotion she has for Rick. Every thought that has her reconsidering her decision pulls her back to his arms. She turns and looks back at the open door, hoping Rick will run out and stop her from leaving. The tug of war between her head and her love for her husband has her heart stuck in the middle, tied up and suffocating with every pull. She thinks about the sacrifice she must make to keep Castle and their family safe and alive. She bites back the shattering sob of grief and steps toward the elevator again. The rope around her heart snaps and she stumbles into the open elevator, sliding down the opposite wall in a puddle of heartbreak. She allows herself to break and pour all of her hurt into the twenty seconds of tears given to her as she descends to the basement garage where she will pick herself up and defend the life she has fought for the last seven years. She will be back. She only hopes that the frayed rope will mend.
