The words in italics are Sawyer's dream. It takes place after 'Trishia Tanaka is dead'. This is my first attempt at writing a LOST fanfic so please leave a review and let me know what you thought about it. Thanks to Sara for giving me feedback & to Oda and Ella for the beta-reading.
"I can't believe it" She said. It was around 9am and they sat on the beach. The group was asleep in their tents. He'd spotted her silhouetted outline all alone on the beach and he'd decided to walk over there. She'd been crying, he knew why she'd cried and it wasn't for him. "Freckles, we did what we had to do to survive. We left him with them. He told us to do it." She turned her head away from him.
"We could have stayed."
"And done what? Hung out in the cages and eating fish crackers!? Yeah...right, that would have been fun!" He said sarcastically.
"We could have stayed on the other island, Sawyer." She added sharply.
"Jack could be anywhere on that freakin' island."
"Why do you always have to be like this!?"
"Like what?"
"So insensitive. Like it's all about you, how you're gonna survive. You're…you're just you. You don't care if anyone gets hurt, it's all about you." He sat quietly for a while, knowing what she'd said was true. Almost true.
"You regret it, this, don't ya'?
"I…then, no. Now, yeah." She answered after a few seconds of doubt, not really sure if she meant what she'd just said.
"Thanks for letting me know," Sawyer begun to walk away, towards the camp. Knowing that the way he was acting right now was stupid but he didn't care. He wished that he hadn't asked the question and that she would call him back. She didn't.
Running. Escaping. Empty streets. The sounds of sirens behind him. The blue light. Nowhere to hide. All alone.
"James?" A voice whispered above him. Sawyer opened his eyes and noticed that it was almost sunrise. Kate leant her head back where she nealt on her knees by the side of the bed.
"Watcha doin' here?"
"I'm sorry, okay? I'm sorry I said so. The fact that I'd to leave Jack…" She said fast, almost tripping on the words.
"Look, if you're here to tell me that you love him. Don't. I don't need to hear it so it's just wasted time for you. Go and look for him if you want to, I'm not coming with ya. I just got back to this camp"'
"Locke, Sayid and I will walk in the morning. I have to go." She looked at him, hoping that he would understand. "I'm not going 'cause I love him, which I don't do by the way. I just owe him that."
"Why'd you come? I could have noticed that you were gone when I woke up." He snapped, as if he didn't care.
"I'm not..." She hesitated and took a deep breath "I'm not that girl who talks about feelings, okay? And I know, hope, that you don't feel like this was a mistake, because I don't think about it that way. I'm just…"
"It's okay.." He turned towards Kate and put a strand behind her ear. She smiled. He smiled.
"Could I just lay here for a few hours, before I leave?" Sawyer nodded and Kate lay down next to him.
"Take care while you're away, don't go and get yourself killed." He wrapped his arm around her and mumbled the eleven words before he fell asleep. She lay awake, thinking about how her life had changed, for the better, since the plane crashed on the island. How lives could change in the blink of an eye.
"I love you." She whispered before she also fell asleep.
