Mark stood and watched Lexie beat herself up over what happened during that botched surgery on Sadie Harris.
She did not see him watching her. Lexie looked as though she was in a prison of her own creation, oblivious to the world around her. Mark understood the ramifications of Lexie and her fellow interns actions, but kind of understood where they were coming from. While the residents are too busy trying to score points with Webber for the first solo surgery, these poor kids are left to their own devices which is never a good thing.
After convincing Derek to take young Lexie home, Mark left to go and grab a beer at Joe's and home to get some much needed sleep. He knew Lexie being in Derek's hands was a good thing and that made Mark feel better.
Part 2
The next day Mark saw Lexie sitting at a table alone in the cafeteria and decided to see how she was doing.
"Good morning Lexie.
Lexie looked up in surprise and wondered why Sloan was calling her by her first name. He never did that.
"Good morning Dr. Sloan. Would you like to have a seat?
"Thanks. After a short pause, Mark asked Lexie how she was.
"Honestly? I feel like an idiot. What was I thinking"?
" You were not being taught so you took matters into your own hands. I get that. But Lexie what you and your fellow interns did was beyond stupid and could have killed Sadie, not to mention your futures", Mark said scoldingly.
" I know. Trust me I have been yelled at by enough people to know that I fucked up big time"!
Mark 's head jerked back at the profanity. "Contrary to popular belief I am far from a priss, Dr. Sloan", Lexie said after noticing his reaction to her foul language.
" I am starting to see that. Look you have what it takes to be a great surgeon. Don't blow it Lexie by being an overzealous knucklehead. Your time will come".
" It's just that I want to learn, and Yang is too busy looking after her own interests to think about teaching me", Lexie said bitterly.
" I know kiddo. Yang isn't exactly a great teacher, but there are other doctors at SGH who would be more than happy to teach you.
" Like who"?
" Why not me? I know you are not supposed to go near a scalpel anytime soon, but you could shadow me".
Lexie smiled and said, " I would like that. But the Chief may object to that, not to mention Yang"!
"Just let me handle them. Trust me Lex when I say I have your back!
" I do trust you Dr. Sloan, but tell me. Why are you doing this?
" Let's just say I know what it feels like to be a stray and let's leave it at that". With a wink Sloan gets up to leave as Lexie ponders his last statement.
