From the ashes of the past: The Phoenix
----------------------------------------

Breathless, she stumbled along. The woods all around her were alive with
sounds; most of them she didn't like. The moon gave scant light to lead her.
She stumbled.

Angry shouts, calling for blood. She had to keep going.

Who knows what would happen if they caught her. Their footsteps and
shouts rang in her ears as she raced through the forest. Her legs ached; she
was out of breath. She would never escape them like this!

But what if she...

No no no! She couldn't...She was too inexperienced. If one spark got out of
control, the entire forest would go up in flames. Then they'd all be dead.
She couldn't take that risk.

She let out a choked sob and tripped over a stray tree root. Low
hanging branches of hungry trees grabbed at her face and hair as hostile
bushes caught on the fabric of her dress. Stumbling again, she heard their
pounding footsteps coming closer. She risked a quick glance over her shoulder
and saw the ominous flickering of their torches.

They were so close! Tears rolled from her eyes and down her cheeks and still she ran.
She changed direction abruptly, trying desperately to loose them. The flickering light
of the torches dimmed a little and she let herself feel a bit of hope.

Suddenly, there were new voices from the left.

'No!', her mind screamed. She was being surrounded! The trees broke off revealing a cliff.

Exhausted, she stopped. She had no where to go now. She was trapped. She
stumbled as close to the edge as she dared. Her pride made her turn around to
meet them. They exited the trees and slowly began their advance on the young girl.
Their eyes were hard and the flicker shadows of the torches turned their faces into
gruesome masks. She backed up, probably farther than she should have.

"Stop right there ye mutant!" hissed one of them.

She took another step back as they moved foreword in unison like an enigma.
Through her tears, she saw familiar faces, faces she had known most of her life.

"Please, don't do this," she begged. She saw a flicker of sympathy in a few of those faces,
but it was replaced by fear and resolve soon after.

"Yer an abomination!"

Angry shouts responded to the shouted phrase and the mob moved foreword once more.
The girl moved backwards again, but this time, she lost her footing. Her eyes widened in
surprise and her mind screamed as the realisation that she was falling came crashing
down on her.

She let out a bloodcurdling scream that would haunt the mob of villagers in their
nightmares for the rest of their lives.
