People often wonder what they want to do with their lives.. since we are kids they ask us what do we want to be when we grow up, some of them will say astronaut, others teachers, cops, chefs, actors, singers, a few others might say they want to be all of them, but a few brave ones will say they want to be doctors.
Well for me it was different, I always knew I wanted to be a surgeon, a neurosurgeon I never thought I could be anything else until being what I always dreamt of was not possible anymore. I'm Derek Shepard and this is the story of how I became one of the best neurosurgeons in the world, I hope this will help you get there.
I went over this speech in my mind for what it appear to be the one thousand and one time, I hope my students would not think of me as a quack, I'm going to teach them about the feeling you get when you are looking at a brain, the organ in the human body that makes you who you are, the soft tissue that surrounds it, the pulsating vibrations, the pinkish colour it's got, the wonderful and jet so complicated pattern the blood vessels create, the rush you get when controlling a brain bleed hoping that the brain does not swell, but I can't explain that to them because you don't really know how does it feels unless you are staring right at it.
I roll over my bed and watch my beautiful pregnant wife and think, how I wish the nerve transplant had been a 100% effective…
