Disclaimer: Puella Magi Madoka Magica is the property of Urobuchi Gen, Studio SHAFT, and uh... whoever publishes the manga, I think. I'm not making any money off this. I originally wrote this for the kink meme on Livejournal. I added a couple more lines.
Incubators are incapable of smiling or feeling emotions. Even if they could, they would have no desire to. For Kyubey, dealing with the girls he contracts into being magical girls is business as usual. There is nothing they can do to make him care about them as individuals.
The morning after Mami died, Madoka didn't seem interested in getting out of bed. Even after her father had told her that it was time to get up, she simply sat up and didn't get out. Her eyes were red. Had she been crying all night? Kyubey just didn't get it. They'd only known each other for a couple days (not that Kyubey would get it if they'd known each other for longer). Why bother getting so upset over it? It was true that he'd lost a powerful magical girl, but Mami and Homura were far from the only ones he'd contracted. Another girl he'd contracted would be coming within the next couple days.
Madoka's father gave her a concerned look and told her that if she wasn't feeling well, he wouldn't force her to go to school. Madoka quietly thanked her father and pulled the covers over her head.
Even after her father left, Madoka couldn't sleep. If Kyubey could frown, he would have. He was determined to get Madoka to make a contract. It wouldn't do if she got sick. Kyubey hopped onto one of her pillows.
"Your father is right, Madoka." He said matter-of-factly. "You should get some rest."
But still Madoka could not will herself to sleep. Kyubey gave a small sigh and made himself comfortable on the pillow. Maybe if Kyubey gave her an example, she'd be able to sleep? For all of her potential, Kyubey didn't think Madoka seemed to be very bright.
It didn't seem to help. Madoka simply curled her blanket and started rolling around like a caterpillar undergoing metamorphosis. Kyubey would have been amused if he were capable of such things. Instead, he simply closed his eyes as Madoka shifted out of the confines of her blankets and sat at the top of the bed.
Kyubey isn't capable of surprise, either, so he has to force himself to flinch when Madoka's head suddenly lands on his body, exhaustion finally getting the better of her as she curls up to him.
She's warm.
Incubators can't feel emotions, but they are capable of feeling pain and changes in temperature. Their bodies aren't entirely different from humans. They have something similar to nerves.
If Kyubey could feel emotion, he'd probably think it felt nice. He can understand that others see Kaname Madoka as a kind person who doesn't deserve such suffering. He might feel bad for indirectly causing her suffering by meeting her, but he can't and won't. The universe was at stake. Even if he could feel emotion, it was clearly the most important. Actually, now that he thought about it, now might be a good time to get her to make a contract, while she's half-asleep.
"Madoka?"
Quiet breathing was his only response.
Ah well. Kyubey supposed the universe could wait just a little longer.
Incubators are incapable of smiling or feeling emotions. Even if they could, they would have no desire to. For Kyubey, dealing with the girls he contracts into being magical girls is business as usual. There is nothing they can do to make him care about them as individuals.
But Kyubey thinks he can give Kaname Madoka this little bit of peace, if only for now.
