Summary: Remus visits Harry after the final battle. AU, obviously.
This is another one-shot song fic, set to 'Wires' by Athlete. I've dug it out from the depths of my computer; it was the first song-fic and first Potter fic I wrote. Basically, it was my first fic. Reading it now, I hope my writing has improved since two years ago!
Disclaimer: The Harry Potter universe and its characters are property of the great J.K.Rowling. The lyrics belong to Athlete.
You got wires going in,
You got wires coming out of your skin,
You got tears making tracks,
I got tears that are scared of the facts.
Had you been in a muggle hospital, there would have been a tangle of wires and tubes attached to you, machines running every part of you, bleeping eerily from time to time.
As it happens, there's just silence. Absolute silence, except for the steady drip of my falling tears.
Running down corridors,
Through automatic doors,
Got to get to you,
Got to see this through,
I see hope is near,
In a plastic box,
I've seen Christmas lights,
Reflect in your eyes.
I sit and remember that night, not willingly; it plays in my head, vividly, instantly…
You run off to the Department of Mysteries, to that room, that dratted room, only to find Voldemort waiting for you.
I remember going after you, with the rest of the Order, sprinting down the hallways, through doors and passageways; passing irrelevant objects as I went. Then we got there, you had just beaten him, and I breathed a sigh of relief. Voldemort was gone, it was over.
But that curse, the one Malfoy sent, it was meant for me! Why didn't you just leave it? What did you jump in front of it for? "Why, Harry, why?!"
You don't answer, and I know I'm wasting my breath. Your box is waiting in the corner of the mortuary, and I shudder as I turn with puffy eyes to look at it.
You got wires going in,
You got wires coming out of your skin,
There's dry blood on your wrist,
Your dry blood on my fingertip.
It's my fault. I was too late, too stupid to realise what you were about to do…
Running down corridors,
Through automatic doors,
Got to get to you,
Got to see this through.
First night of your life,
Curled up on your own,
Looking at you now,
You would never know…
You would never know what it's like to be an adult in the world, but you had already grown up enough to be one. You were going to graduate in a week. You would never get to hold the Order of Merlin, First Class you've been so deservingly appointed. You'd never see your Headmaster's face shining with pride when he knew you'd defeated Lord Voldemort….
I see it in your eyes,
I see it in your eyes,
You'll be alright,
I see it in your eyes,
I see it in your eyes,
You'll be alright.
I shiver again as I look around the cold, silent room, my sniffs echoing hollowly. Those eyes. Those bright green eyes, and that scar, had given hope to the world. Lily's eyes.
"I bet your talking to her right now… say hello from me, Harry." I say this out loud, hoping that, somehow, you'll hear me.
