Disclaimer:I don't own Harry Potter or Christmas Shoes.
I like to think that Draco turned good. This is one of the moments where that side of him came out.
Draco had never been sentimental. Especially about Christmas. So Christmas Eve didn't mean much to him. In fact, ever since his mother died a few years ago, he tried to forget it.
She had always made it a fun day; they would bake cookies and decorate a small tree, just the two of them. His father never approved of the festivities that he and so desperately wanted to take part in.
So, today, Draco wandered through Diagon Alley, trying to distract himself. Which, he realized, probably was not one of his best ideas, seeing as Diagon Alley was one the most elaborately decorated places he had ever been to.
Still, he found himself in a crowded store on line for something he probably didn't need. But he was at a point where his state of mind told him: you're already here, there no use in leaving. As he stared down at his watch trying to make it move faster, his eye caught the frantic figure of a little boy pacing.
It was annoying at first. The only thing stopping him from approaching the little boy was the fact that it wasn't worth his time. He ignored the boy for the most part until it was his turn to check out. The young boy placed a box on the counter next to a pile of loose change.
The cashier looked at the change and counted it quickly. He shook his head after a moment.
"Sorry kid, you don't have enough here." He bent down a little to try and get closer to the boys height. "Why don't you come back some other time?" The little boy looked up at the cashier brokenhearted and then turned to Draco and said in the most innocent voice:
"Sir I wanna buy these shoes for my mama please. Daddy says there's not much time. Y'see, she's been sick for quite a while. I know these shoes will make her smile. Won't she look so beautiful, if mamma meets Jesus tonight?"
As Draco heard this small voice plead such a deep, heartfelt desire, he felt something within him change. He knew he had to do *something* to help the poor boy in front of him…he looked at the price of the shoes, and it was only a small price to pay. The cashier put the shoes in a bag, and handed the boy the receipt.
Draco felt warmth blossom within him as the boy looked at him with a toothy grin and suddenly lurched forward and hugged the kind stranger who had given him the money to pay for his mother's last Christmas gift.
And Draco smiled as he watched the boy run off, the bag in his hands. The cashier smiled at him, too.
"You did a real good thing tonight y'know? His mother has cancer. His father had been out of work, and the boy has been here, lookin to buy those shoes. It killed me every time to say he didn't have enough, but I can't afford to lose this job. Thank you for doing what I wish I could have. You are truly a saint."
"Please. I don't deserve such praises. Not after what I've done in my lifetime." Draco said looking down.
"Doesn't matter. To that boy, you are a hero. Don't forget that, alright?"
So Draco smiled, payed for what he needed, and left, feeling happier than when he had arrived.
