-l- Reasons –l-

Sometimes there are none…

Blood poured from the entry wound. The man didn't look like he was going to make it. Pressure on the hole in his chest wasn't even slowing down the seemingly endless stream of crimson. Don stood by and watched the paramedics while the man on the pavement exhaled the last bit of air his lunges could handle. After more than five minutes, Don finally took a step back and turned his head away from the unchangeable dark part of his day. It had happened right in front of him. It were days like this, he doubted his ability to move on. On days where he witnessed an innocent man bleed out on the cold street stones, he even doubted his sanity. This wasn't why he'd decided to join the FBI all those years ago. This wasn't why he wanted to continue this line of work. He watched the little girl at the back of the ambulance, her eyes red, cheeks wet.

Don glanced at the other body on the pavement. Her dead eyes stared at him, making him feel uncomfortable and guilty. If he'd been here sooner, then maybe just maybe, he could've saved her. Saved them it seemed now.

They couldn't drag the girl away from the scene and Don didn't blame her. She needed to know if her dad would be okay.

Truth was that the father wasn't going to make it. Don knew that she was clinging to false hope, but he still didn't blame her. Hope, however false it might've been, was all the girl had left.

The mother's empty stare kept bothering him and a chill ran down his spine. After breathing for a few moments he pulled himself together and motioned for one of the officers to do something about the sight in front of them. The girl's parents were gone, shot by a bunch of trigger-happy robbers, she didn't need to witness all of this.

He could do this. After taking in another deep breath he crossed the distance between himself and the ambulance. She immediately picked up his presence and slowly looked up at him.

"I'm Don," he introduced himself.

The end
