Author's Note
Hi! Ok well...this is my first story. Actually this was for a creative writing assignment for english. I'm not the best writer, so construtive criticism is welcomed :D I don't plan on continuing this but if there's enough people saying they want it to continue, I'll be happy to continue.
Aperture Laboratories
Caroline was always a good assistant to Mr. Cave Johnson, the creator of Aperture Science. She bought him coffee, worked with experiments, helped him with anything. She even got married to him and had their first child, Chell. Unfortunately, everything started to change after Mr. Johnson got mercury poisoning and inhaled moon rock particles for one of their experiments. He was now on his death bed, but wanting to live forever; he made his scientists to work on a computer: Genetic Lifeform and Disk Operating System; GLaDOS for short. He planned to be transferred into it and keep being in charge of Aperture.
"Here are your pills Mr. Johnson," said Caroline.
"Caroline, you know you can call me Cave," Mr. Johnson weakly smiled at her and gratefully took the pills.
"I know, but you're still technically the boss, Cave."
"Caroline…we discussed this. I might not live long enough for GLaDOS to be completed."
Caroline walked over to Cave and awkwardly hugged him in his wheelchair. "Cave I know what you want but I can't."
"Damn it Caroline!" Cave stopped to cough and continued, "You have to be transferred into GLaDOS if I die before it's finished!"
"Mr. Johnson I don't want this!" screamed Caroline.
Mr. Johnson sighed and took Caroline's hands, "I know, but there's no other choice. We both know I'm going to die before GLaDOS is finished."
"Cave, don't say that…and what about Chell?"
"Doug can take care of her."
"Cave please…she's our daughter."
"That's why Doug is going to take care of her."
Caroline walked away with tears running down her face. She knew there was nothing she could say or do to change his mind.
"Caroline?"
Caroline quickly wiped her tears away and turned around. "Doug…how are you?"
"He told you…"
"Yes he did…"
"Did you hear the new recording?"
Caroline looked at Doug in shock. Cave never does a voice recording without me. "No…I haven't."
"I suggest you do. I have to go…GLaDOS is taking longer than we thought."
Doug walked away, leaving Caroline standing there. I have to know what's on that recording. Caroline walked to one of the testing tracks and found the recording. She started to play it and rolled her eyes when he started talking about combustible lemons. She fast forwarded until he stopped ranting.
"The point is: if we can store music on a compact disk, why can't we store a man's intelligence and personality on one? So I have the engineers figuring that one out right now. Brain mapping, artificial intelligence...we should've been working on it thirty years ago. And I will say this, and I'm gonna say it on tape so everybody hears it a hundred times a day: If I die before you people can pour me in to a computer, I want Caroline to run this place. Now she'll argue, she'll say she can't do it. She's modest like that. But you make her! Hell, put her in my computer, I don't care. Alright, test's over. You can head on back to your desk."
Caroline felt her eyes water, threatening to fall. "Oh Cave…"
