"Naruto, wait for me idiot!" Uchiha Sasuke yelled in annoyance as the boy in question sped through the canopy in front of him, laughing all the while.
Normally, falling behind Naruto would be unheard of, but he had injured his left leg in a sparring session with Kakashi a few days prior and it had yet to heal fully. Not that this knowledge helped his pride any; he hated losing at anything, especially to Naruto of all people.
"C'mon Sasuke, this way!" Naruto called behind him, jumping down to the forest floor. He ran on ahead, soon disappearing into an opening between the trees.
Sasuke sighed internally, unsure why he had even agreed to this. He dropped to the ground as well and slowed his pace to a walk, wondering what all the fuss could possibly be about. The bright morning sun obscured his vision of whatever lay ahead, leaving him with only one way to find out...
His eyes took a moment to adjust as he stepped past the trees and when they did, his jaw almost dropped comically. It was a field full of sunflowers of all things. How had they never come across it before? He kept walking forward, wishing to get a closer look at the large flowers.
A sudden gust of wind blew across the clearing, causing the tall plants to sway gently back and forth, like living waves in a veritable sea of gold. The young Uchiha stood transfixed, having never seen anything quite like it; oddly, it reminded him a bit of Naruto's hair. This must have been what the blond had wanted to show him.
Speaking of which, Sasuke suddenly sensed movement to the right, but his distraction prevented him from reacting in time; down he went as Naruto tackled him none too gently.
"Hehe, got you!" Naruto beamed proudly, sitting up on his knees and offering the other boy a hand.
"Ouch, you landed on my bad leg moron!" Sasuke grumbled, begrudgingly accepting the help offered to him. He sat back on his hands and was quiet for a moment, enjoying the gentle caress of the cool breeze against his skin. "Anyway, is this what you wanted to show me?"
Naruto nodded enthusiastically, "Yeah! You've been so moody lately, I thought you might like a quiet place like this to brood instead of cooped up all alone at home." he stated bluntly, as if this made all the sense in the world.
It took a moment for Sasuke to actually realize what Naruto had said. "You - hey I do NOT brood, dobe!" he retorted, slipping back into the old insult from their Academy days.
"Like hell you don't, teme." Naruto chuckled, more than willing to play this game. He flopped onto his back and stretched out on the grass, perfectly relaxed. "Look, just quit arguing and take a nap with me, okay? You'll feel better afterward, I promise."
Well, now that Naruto mentioned it, he was a bit tired and the ground here was pretty soft; aside from the soothing sound of the sunflowers rustling in the wind it was nice and quiet here too...
'Damn it.' Sasuke swore to himself, knowing he had already lost. "Fine Naruto, you win." Sasuke conceded and lay down next to his friend.
Naruto only smiled and snuggled in close to the older boy, already half asleep.
Somehow, Sasuke didn't really mind losing like this.
