Disclaimer: I miss you, I miss me, I miss them, and I'm surely missing out, because I don't own the rights to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
It was a strange feeling; missing someone who was right there, not three feet away. But that was their reality, that's what she did. She missed him. However irrational it was. Missed the intimacy they used to share. The freedom to reach over the others shoulder and type something on their keyboard, without having to think about the repercussions if they accidentally touched, even the slightest, in the process. They used to be a team, a package solution, you couldn't have one without the other. Now they just were. Individuals, together.
They still worked well as a whole, they always had. They were each others second pair of eyes, their helping hands and complementary wits, and they got the job done, as they always did. But for a while now something had been missing. It was a vital part of what made them who they were. The glue that had held them together for so many years now. Their friendship.
A shift brought on by unfortunate circumstances. Circumstances she was now willing to change. She had needed some time to process everything that had happened, and now felt like she was ready to move forward. Ready to address the issue, to move the elephant out of the room, and bridge the chasm.
Starting over seemed like an excellent idea. Not exactly fresh eyes, they'd seen too much already, but a new beginning, a do over. A chance to – not right what went wrong, that was impossible – but a chance to reconnect, to find their way back to who they used to be, to a happier and more innocent time. Going back like this might sound good on paper, but denying their past would eventually come back to haunt them. They realized this, but they also knew that for anything good to happen they would have to form a solid foundation first, only then would they be able to rebuild their friendship, and in this way they would be ready for whatever might happen to them in the future.
What they needed was to find a balance between existing in each others presence and being present in each others existence.
A/N: I missed writing for these characters, hiatus's are not conducive for my writing. It seems that new material is the source of my inspiration.
