Painful Memories
I stayed for the whole funeral procession.
I felt like I had to, even though I almost broke down right then and there. I mean, I was the guy's best friend, right?
It was so weird.
I had talked to him just yesterday afternoon.
And then. Last night, he was murdered near the telephone booth.
He just couldn't be dead. I couldn't accept it.
But somebody else didn't even know.
"Daddy, wake up!" His little girl, Elicia. "Mommy, why are they burying daddy?!" She was crying and panicking next to her mom as they lowered Hughes into the ground in front of her innocent eyes. "He should wake up soon! He told me so! He said he just had some work to do, and then he'd come play with me!! Mommy, don't let them do this!!! DADDY WAKE UP!!!!"
Her mother, Gracia, bent and tried to comfort her softly. "Honey, he's not going to wake up. HE just can't." The little girl sniffled and buried her head in her mom's neck and started sobbing again.
The funeral moved on, and people came and went.
After everyone had left. I stayed and talked to his grave, recalling past time with him.
"I miss you, Hughes." I thought for a moment and then chuckled. " Remember the time, when we were little, when we snuck into old Mr. Robert's backyard garden and stole some of his carrots, just for the fun of it? And then he came out hollering and yelling at us, and then tried to sic his two dogs on us?" I let out another chuckle. "We ran like the devil itself was on our heels."
I quickly reread the engraving on the stone below your name.
"Wherever you are Hughes, I hope you're happy." I laughed derisively. "You died and got promoted two ranks to Brigadier General, while I'm still living and am a Lieutenant Colonel. That's not fair."
I heard footsteps behind me and a voice said calmly, "Are you ready to go, sir?"
It was Lt. Hawkeye.
I put my military cap on and looked up at the sky.
"It's going to rain today, Lt." I said simply.
"But sir." Hawkeye replied. "There isn't even a cloud in the sky, and it's sunny."
"It's going to rain." I stated again.
"But…." Hawkeye started, and out of the corner of my eye I saw her look at my face and say. "Yes sir. It's going to rain."
There were tears streaming out of my eyes.
