Crash and Burn

A/N: Ok, this is my version of how Meredith found out Derek was staying with Addison. Oneshot for now, i don't know if i'll continue, let me know if you want me to.

Meredith and Derek stood in the scrub room, George in between them. Meredith grabbed a face mask, and paused for a moment, glancing at the nervous man next to her. ''George!'' She whispered through her teeth. He nodded and quickly grabbed a paper towel from the side, disappearing into the OR. As she watched George disappear, she turned her attention to Derek.

''Hey.'' She said casually, trying to read his body language, but he was hiding himself very well.

''Hi.'' He paused, but didn't look up. He continued to wash his hands, staring around blankly. ''You know i uh, I went to the bar.''

''I heard.''

''Take some Aspirin with the bana bag? Helps with the hangover.'' He told her, his voice emotionless and slightly cold.

She nodded, the silence filled the room as Meredith waited for some sort of explanation, and answer. ''Oh.'' She felt herself sinking into the dark and neverending hole of realisation, like a sharp slap across the face ripping her in two. ''You're staying with her.''

''Mer, She's my wife.'' He said defensively. She looked at him in disbelief, almost hurt by his words. Almost.

''So i guess i was someone you screwed to get over being screwed.'' His head turned towards her, he stared at her sorrowful eyes, on the brink of tears.

''Meredith, that's not how it is.I have to make my marriage work, i at least have to try. For everyone's sake.'' Meredith laughed bitterly, throwing the face mask back down.

''Then what was that whole heart-to-heart thing Derek? You told me i saved you from drowning--''

''And you told me that wasn't enough.''

''I was still mad at you, i had reason to be mad at you, but that was before i realised how i felt.''

''And how do you feel?'' He said, taking her head into his hands, wiping away the falling teardrops with the pads of his thumbs.

''Clearly not the same as you. I told you to pick me Derek, i asked you to love me. But that was too much to ask. Do you even realise how stupid those words sound now? I sounded like a lovesick teenager. And i deserve better, than to be talked about. I know what these nurses say, they think im a slutty intern, a homewrecking whore. This is not my fault, i didn't ask for this. But you chose you adulterous bitch over me. The woman you voluntarily call Satan. You don't even care enough to defend her.'' She reached for her pager, sniffing back the tears that dared to fall again.

''Meredith, what are you doing?''

''I'm paging Cristina. She can scrub in on your surgery. We're done here, Dr. Shepherd. Now it's strictly professional.''

''Meredith--'' He reached out to grab her arm, but she slipped from his grip, and left the room. Derek exhaled deeply, and leaned against the door. He gasped as he heard the muffled sounds of uncontrollable crying from the other side.

''Dr. Shepherd, she's crashing.'' He heard Preston calling to him.

''I know she is.'' He whispered into the air.
