Trying my hand at writing drabble. As you can see, I fail miserably.

Beanie

She'd never seen him without it, unless it was when she forced him and the others to dress up in those crazy costumes (admittedly, some of them looked really nice on them while others just made her giggle). It was an old dingy thing: faded and worn, fraying at the hems, and if she got close enough there was usually the faint smell of aftersmoke, alcohol, and some unidentifiable rank.

"Shinjirou-senpai."

"Hrn?"

"Why do you always wear that beanie?"

"'Cuz I damn well want to."

Of course, that wasn't a good enough answer for her. So she kept bugging him about it. Every time, she got the same answer.

Then she got the real answer on a windy day in September. Looping her arm with his, beaming from ear to ear and seemingly totally oblivious to her "date's" (embarrassed) grumbling, as she half-dragged him into the theatres.

"Shinjirou-senpai~"

"Hrn?"

Taking the chance as they walked home, she snagged the beanie from off his head. Despite his protests, she poked her face into it.

"What the hell are you doing?"

"Looking for your emotions."

"What!"

"You always hide your eyes with it. I thought maybe you keep your feelings tucked away inside." And so saying, she crammed the woolen object onto her head and grinned up at him. "Look! Now I'm wearing Shinjirou-senpai's emotion bank!"

He stared at her like she was crazy. Then an amused snort, and he rolled his eyes.

"Right . . . you're a weird one. But you're wrong. You won't find anything in there."

And suddenly her world went dark. With a sound of protest she tried to pull the hat back up but his hand was firm. Then . . .

". . . . !"

When the offending object was lifted from her eyes, all she could do was blink in shocked confusion. Had he just . . . ? There was a devilish gleam in his eyes, and she could have sworn his lips wanted to smirk at her. Nonetheless the beanie was back on his head.

"C'mon. Let's go."

She smiled and nodded, one hand coming up to her lips, as if to keep the sensation there. Because the entire way back home, he never once let go of her hand.
