Beep. Beep. Beep.
You sit in the chair next to your son's bed. He's asleep now. You don't know why he is sick. No one can find a cure. This is the third hospital you have taken him to. No disease fits what he has. He is only seven. He cannot die. You cannot lose him. There must be something that can be done.
Thump. Thump. Thump.
The sound of his cane as it hits the floor with each step brings both fear and hope to your heart. Is it good news or is it bad? Does he have the answer? His team of doctors have done so many tests. They have asked so many questions. Two even visited your house and his school. Did they find anything? Do you really want to know? You have to, though you are so scared to know.
Click. Click. Click.
The sound of the MRI taking images haunts your brain. You see your child's body, nothing making sense to you. The two doctors point to various images and comment on the images, but nothing connects to you. You say the occasional encouraging words to your child, telling him it's almost over even though you do not know. What the end is, you are even more terrified of.
Beep. Beep. Bee-
The heart monitor stops, as does your own. You scream for help. A large man pulls you from the room and the paddles are brought you to revive your son. The man holds you back from seeing your child. You watch in horrible agony as the line stays flat. Each second lasts a millennium. Is this it?
Thump. Thump. Thump.
The man with the cane enters the room. He sits down next to you. You are a complete mess. Your son was brought back, barely. He tells you of a rare, treatable disease. You have never heard of it, but you do not care. The treatment is dangerous, but it doesn't matter. If he does not get it, he will die. You sign the paper, and your son's life, away.
Click. Click. Click.
You smile from the doorway of your son's room. He is clicking his pen while doing homework. He is well again. He is alive. Nothing else in the world matters to you.
The End.
