Jonas rode his bike quickly to the Giver's dwelling. He buzzed the door. As he waited for the Giver to let him in, he tried to slow his breathing and focus on what they needed to do.
"What is it, Jonas?" the Giver asked as Jonas rushed into the dwelling away from the observant eyes of the elders.
"Now." Jonas said. "We must do it now. I overheard my father talking about how Gabriel is to be released tomorrow. We cannot let that happen." The Giver sighed and looked out the window.
"Are you sure this is the best way, Jonas?" he asked.
"I am sure."
"Have you talked to Asher?" the Giver asked.
"I talked to him today. But he still might need some convincing. He trusts me but he doesn't understand. Not really."
The Giver walked to the wall and gave directions for Asher to be brought to his dwelling. "We must be sure that Asher is willing to help. Can he be trusted?" the Giver asked Jonas looking deeply into his gray eyes.
"I am sure." Jonas said. "Jonas may be playful and silly but he is also loyal. He will help us." The door buzzed. They both looked at the screen and saw Asher standing outside the dwelling.
"Come in Asher," the Giver said.
It took awhile for Jonas to explain to Asher the plan. He went slowly so that Asher could ask questions and understand what was being asked of him. He was asking him to break the rules of the community.
"Are you willing to help us Asher? Are you willing to help the community?" Jonas asked.
"I will do it." Asher said, "If you think this is what is right."
"I do." Jonas said with certainty.
"When?" Asher asked.
"Today." Jonas replied.
Jonas and the Giver watched Asher on the screen in the Giver's dwelling. Jonas wished Gabe could be there with him as he watched but he knew that would make the elders suspicious. Asher flew the plane with confidence. When he reached the boundary of the community, he was told on the radio to turn around. He kept flying. "Asher, turn the plane around." He was commanded. Asher closed his eyes and did just as Jonas had told him to. His hand pushed the button that launched a missile at the boundary. They all watched as the boundary between the community and elsewhere was destroyed.
The Giver switched the screen so they could watch the members of the community as the boundary collapsed and memories flooded back to them. Memories of war, family, animals, pain, death, joy, love.
The Giver turned slowly to Jonas, "We will have an important job now. We must help the members through this. They do not understand. Some will be angry."
"I know. But it is right. They deserve to know. They deserve to have choice. Freedom. Joy. Even if it means they must know pain." Jonas answered. "I stayed so that we can show them the way."
