Disclaimer: I own nothing but the plot
Clary hunched over the bowl, her face screwing up as she once again heaved up the contents of her stomach.
"Clary? Honey maybe you should stay home from school again, and go to the doctors? I'll make an appointment. Here is some water, I'll be right back." Clary shakily stood up and watched her mothers retreating figure through the mirror, as she carefully sipped some water. She leaned her hands against the vanity and hung her head, exhausted. This was the third day in a row she had woken up sick, and Clary was not a fan of mum popped her head in the bathroom.
"Clary, would 12:00 work?"
"Yeah, sure." Clary nodded and slowly walked back out to sit on her bed. Her head rested in her hands, Clary tried to gain the motivation to get up and shower but couldn't find any, instead opting for going back to sleep.
2 hours later, Clary was awoken to her mum gently stroking her hair.
"Hey hon, how are you feeling?"
Clary nodded, surprised to find she felt better. "Yeah better. I might have a shower before the appointment."
"Good idea, you'll feel better. Its 10:00 now, and I would recommend having something to eat. We should probably leave around 11:40, okay?" Clary nodded and with a kiss to he cheek Jocelyn was gone. Clary pulled herself out of bed and gathered her things for a shower, jumping in under the hot spray quickly.
Clary let the water pour through her hair and down her back, and sighed as she began to wake up properly. She washed her hair and body and turned the water off, pulling a towel tightly around her body. Clary twisted her hair up into a towel and began carefully putting makeup on, settling on foundation, mascara, and eyeliner. Once makeup was out of the way, she made her way to her closet to choose what to wear.
It looked warm outside, so Clary searched for her favourite plain black dress, which she paired with globe socks and black converse. Her hair was now only damp so Clary pulled it up into a messy bun and grabbed her phone, wallet and keys from where they sat on her dresser and left her room to make her way to the kitchen. She made her way to the fridge and pulled out yoghurt and some berries, mixing it together and sat down at the island bench. 10 minutes later Jocelyn emerged and flicked the kettle on, sitting down beside Clary.
"DO you know what work you've missed out on?"
"Nah but Izzy was going to give it to Jace to give to me, cause im pretty sure Jace is coming home with Jon."
"How is Jace going?"
"Good…?"
"That's good, hows your relationship going?" Clary hid her face in her hands, her face already blushing like crazy.
"Mum, come on." Jocelyn laughed.
"Come on Clare, you know how I love to embarrass you."
"Your so annoying mum."
"Mah you love me," Jocelyn said with a grin. She ruffled Clary's hair affectionately and stood up, pouring the hit water into 2 cups ready for the water to make coffee. Jocelyn slid a cup to Clary who took it and gave her mum a sheepish smile.
"Love you too mum."
"I feel so used clary." Clary laughed and placed her bowl in the sink, curling her hands around her mug. "Are you feeling better Clare?"
"Yeah, heaps better thanks."
"That's good. Are you driving?" Clary grinned and jangled her car keys."Can't wait. Are you sure you feel up to driving?"
"Mum I'll be fine. Besides I need to get my hours up."
"Yes, yes I know. I remember when Jon was on his L's, that was an experience I'll never forget." Clary laughed and gulped down the rest of her coffee, filling it with water and placing it in the sink.
"Ready to go Clare-bear?"
"Yup." Clary grabbed her things in her hand, grabbed her jacket from the hook by the door and entered the garage where her car sat on the furthest left. Jocelyn got in the passenger seat and got ready, clicking the button for the door to open. Clary drove out of the garage, and down the massive driveway surrounding the Fray's house. Clary never thought much for it; for the house and cars but they really were very well off. The Frays lived in the rich part of town, due to Jocelyn's successful artworks and Valentine who was a known doctor, currently away at a conference. Clary drove the way to the doctor, pulling into a park close by and turning off the engine.
"Clare I might just hang here, is that alright? I have some calls I need to make."
Clary nodded, "Oh, okay."
"Is that ok hon? I can come with you if you want."
"No, that's fine. Thanks, I'll be back soon. I hope." Clary kissed her mum on the cheek and made her way out of the car and into the waiting room. She made her way to the receptionist and stood patiently in line.
"Next."
"Um Clary Morgenstern."
The woman clicked away on her keyboard, her fake nails clacking away loudly.
"Dr. Herondale 12 oclock?"
"Yes, that's it."
"Okay please take a seat. Next!" Clary took a seat in the corner and pulled out her phone, opting for social media in replacement of crappy out of date magazines. Clary was broken out of her thoughts when a loud voice called "Clarissa Morgenstern!" Clary stood up and smiled at dr. Herondale, following her down the hall and into an office in the corner. She sat down and the older woman smiled at her.
"Hello Clary, how are you?"
"Yeah good thanks, how are you?"
"Im fine thanks Clary. How are you and Jace? Keeping that boy in check I hope!"
Clary chuckled and blushed, nodding her head slightly. "Dont give him a chance to misbehave."
"I should hope not!" Dr. Herondale said jokingly with her own chuckle. "Now, what seems to be the problem Clary?"
"Well Ive been sick recently. Like vomitting and stuff, its been going for 3 days."
Dr. Herondale frowned. "Well that's not good. How do you feel now?"
"Yeah I feel fine at the moment."
"Okay, has there been any other symptoms?"
"Not that I can think of."
"Ok, we'll take some tests just in case theres something more serious; its probably not though, just a common flu or something." Dr. Herondale said in a reassuring voice. She walked out of the room and returned holding a small cup.
"Clary would you be able to urinate in this please? Theres a bathroom across the hall, and a water cooler just outside." She said with a smile as Clary left the room.
When Clary was finished she returned and had a blood sample taken.
"Thanks Clare. Now I'm just going to go put these in for testing, ill be back in a moment."
Clary sat patiently in the office, her hands clasped loosely in her lap. Dr. Herondale reentered the room with a small bottle in her hands.
"Here you go Clary. The tests will be back within 2-3 days, I can try speed them up slightly for you," she said with a wink, "but for now here are some tablets that you should take if you feel sick. They may not provide much relief but should provide a little, and if there is something serious it will not effect that in any way."
"Thanks, Dr. Herondale."
"No problem Clary, I'll see you tomorrow night?"
"Yes, ill see you then, thank you."
"No worries." Dr. Herondale showed Clary to the door to her office and Clary walked out of the building, squinting slightly at the light and got into the car.
"How'd it go?"
"Yeah, she said it wasn't anything major, but took blood and pee for samples. I should have the results in a few days."
"Ok. Do you want to go to school or are you wanting to stay home?"
"I may as well stay home."
"Ok, off you go." Clary carefully put the car into reverse and drove out onto the highway, dodging her way through traffic.
"So whens dad getting home?"
Jocelyn sighed. "I have no idea. The conference still has 1 week left, but I think he was catching up with an old friend or something so it could be another 2 weeks."
"Oh, ok. Are the Lightwoods and Herondale coming over tomorrow night?"
"Yes, they are. Which reminds me, did you want to come to the studio with me now, one of my clients saw a painting of yours and fell in love with it; they want you to paint something for them."
Clary gasped. "Are you serious! That is awesome, of course I'll come!" Quickly executing a u-turn Clary drove in the direction of Jocelyn's studio/gallery where she created and sold paintings. Jocelyn used to do it at the house, but found it hard to distinguish a line between work and family, so she bought a studio where she did a majority of her work.
Clary parked around the back of the building, at the reserved parking and got out of her car, locking it behind her. Jocelyn collected her bags and walked to the back entrance, where she unlocked the door and motioned for Clary to follow her through. Jocelyn dumped her stuff on the small crowded desk in the corner of her workshop and tied her hair up into a messy bun.
"I'll show you the painting my client liked." Clary followed her mum through the workshop which was littered with canvas, paints, rags and paintbrushes. Clary loved the mayhem of the workshop. It was the perfect work environment for an artist and that was more comforting than anything. Jocelyn left the door ajar as they made their way through the gallery. It was quiet, their footsteps echoing around the empty gallery and Jocelyn gestured to a small area in the corner, home to a few of Clary's own paintings.
Jocelyn pointed to one particular painting.
"This Is the one he was interested in."
Clary looked at the painting fondly. It was of an angel, bright against a dark swirling background. Clary had done it, mostly out of boredom but had worked hard on it none the less, and apparently it had paid off.
"He was asking for another angel painting. No requirements that he set, just have an angel in it."
"Awesome."
"And, he was offering $650 for it." Clary gasped.
"Are you serious!"
"Well I wasn't willing to sell it at first, so he just upped his price."
"I cant believe it! My first painting to get sold."
"I know honey, Im so proud of you."
Clary blushed and hugged her mum. "Thanks mum."
"No worries hon, now lets get painting!"
Clary grinned and walked back into the workshop, gathering up spare canvas, paints, brushes and an easel and set up in a relatively clear area in the corner, which had sunlight streaming through. Clary let her mind wonder as she began painting, trying to find inspiration. With a grin Clary realised what she would paint and set to work.
