It was the weirdest feeling. I was inside, in front of the fire, but I still felt cold. Not a cold when you cough and sneeze and have a fever, I was actually cold. My mom wrapped me up in a blanket, but it must have been one of those quick flu's because it went away by the next day.

I was playing with my puppets, putting a show on for m sister, when my fingers felt frost-bitten. I couldn't tell what was wrong with them. The doctor said that I just had frost-bite, except… it's the middle of summer. I was terrified that I would die, as any over-exaggerating 11 year-old would imagine.

We were leaping around on the rocks, trying to not touch the ground. I leapt to another boulder, when I slipped and fell. When I stood up with only a throbbing head, I saw that the rock had one spot, only a foot across, that was coated in frost, with a clear foot-slipping mark in the middle. Luckily it melted quickly in the summer sun. I never played such games again.

We were playing catch this time. She had the ball and was laughing at my joking attempts to throw a fake one. I did the wind-up, and the throw! Except I actually threw a snow ball. I hadn't been holding one- we had no idea where it came from. It luckily missed her, but we were in such shock that we just sat under the tree for the rest of the day.

The pond looked extra clear today, and my sister and I decided to go fishing. We were sitting patiently, waiting for a bite, when I poked my toe into the water to see how warm it was. The water froze instantly and I ended up pulling out a chunk of ice with it. My sister swore she wouldn't say anything, but I was still frightened- I tried never to let it show.

I woke up this morning, and my entire room was freezing, with frost glistening on my bed. I stuck my head outside, but it was still warm out. This time my mom saw, and she was so confused. She said that I should sleep with more blankets, but I knew she had no idea what had just happened, just like I didn't, and it scared me.

Ice skating today went well, until my sister got stuck on the ice. It was an accident! I was skating and slipped. It was fine, but when my hand touched the ice, the entire pond cracked. I was so scared, just like I had been all these years. I had to make sure she was safe. I found a stick on the ice and held it out to her to grab a hold of. I managed to wing her out of the way, just as the ice cracked- and I fell through.

Darkness. That's the first thing I remember. It was dark, and it was cold. And I was scared.

But then… I saw the moon. It was so big and bright, and it seemed to chase the darkness away. And when it did… I wasn't scared anymore.

My name is Jack Frost - how do I know that? The moon told me so. But that was all he ever told me. And that was a long, long time ago.
