Hiko Seijuro XIII startled awake as a piercing scream rent the night.
He stumbled, half conscious, to this new pupil, who was still heartbreakingly small, but looking not so starved. The young redhead shivered and clutched himself, caught in the throws of a nightmare.
"It's just a dream, Kenshin," Hiko called softly. He laid a calming hand on the child's shoulder.
The child grabbed Hiko's arm, clutching like a drowning man, surprising in his desperate strength. "Shh, you're safe here," he whispered, drawing closer to Kenshin's tiny form. "I'll protect you my son."
