AN: Okay, so I watched Lauren and was absolutely devastated, but I figured that Emily needed a happier send off than that. So here is a short little scene between Spencer Reid and Emily Prentiss. NOT SLASH! Read and review.
Disclaimer: I do not, in any way, shape, or form, own Criminal Minds or anything else associated with it. The only thing that's mine is the plot.
Spencer Reid stared once again down at the grave. He always left at this time of year and he honestly didn't think the rest of the team would blame him. He had never blamed or wanted to kill Tobias Henkel. He had wanted to kill Charles Henkel and Raphael, but not Tobias: never Tobias. Tobias had just been a scared kid in over his head. He didn't know what to do. Tobias had killed his father and lost it. None of this was his fault.
"Hi, Spencer," Someone said from behind him. "H-how've you been?"
"Fine," He answered monosyllabically. He turned to look at Emily Prentiss stand behind him. She gave him a weak smile. "You're taking a huge risk by coming here."
"I can take a risk for a friend." She sighed. "When did you figure out I was still alive?"
"It didn't take long," Reid replied. "Maybe a week after the hospital."
"How'd you know?" Emily asked curiously.
"Emily, I'm not stupid." Reid said rolling his eyes. "Hotch and JJ had a discussion without the rest of us, we weren't allowed to see the body, and the equivalent of $100 000 was wired to various European banks."
"How did you find out about that?" Emily asked.
"I watched Garcia do it once." Reid muttered. Emily sighed as Reid fidgeted uncomfortably. She knew why he was here as well as he knew why Hotch had sent her to find him.
"Hand me them, Spencer." She sighed not postponing it any longer. "You don't want to go back there again and I know it."
"He's the only innocent man I've ever had to kill, Em." Reid said finally letting the tears leave his eyes. He looked away from her and back at the, now, four year-old grave. "Does it ever get any easier?"
"I wish I could tell you that eventually it won't seem as horrible, but that'd be a lie." Emily sighed putting an arm around the young genius. "The truth is you never will get over it, but one day you'll wake up and find that it's become part of who you are. It's unfortunate, but it's made you stronger." Emily rested her head on Reid's shoulder and the two friends stood there mourning the loss of a child until the sun was low on the horizon. Reid turned to Emily and gave her a tight hug.
"Goodbye, Emily." Reid grimaced. Emily felt something being pushed into her hand and looked down to see two bottles of dilaudad.
"Goodbye." She said wiping a tear from her eye. Next thing Reid knew his friend was gone. He shoved his hands in his pockets and walked slowly back to his hotel.
AN: There it is. It's a little bitter sweet I think. It's kind of like him saying goodbye and thank you at the same time...I don't know that's up to you to interpret. Please review.
