~I am not my own, for I have been made new.
Please don't let me go. I desperatley need you..
-Owl City "Meteor Shower"
It's not like she was ever afraid to be who she really was. She was proud of her personality and made sure everyone knew that. But around certain people- like Quinn or Santana- she hid herself a bit. She acted less of who she was and more of who they saw her as. An insecure little girl.
She's never been proud of this, and she's getting better at not being who they see. During glee, she's always spoken her mind. But in the hallways, during classes, out and about, she pretended to be invisible.
When Sam waltzed into her life, she became less afraid of herself. She learned that, just like him, she had her quirks. Certain parts of her personality were what made her, her. Rachel now understood that Quinn and Santana, and all the other popular girls at McKinley had no power (whatsoever) over her. She needed to stop acting like what they thought of her mattered.
With Sam, It felt like she was a new person. She was changed, for the better.
While dating Finn, she never felt like he gave her an opportunity to open up. She had to, once again, shy away from the truth. But Sam made sure she never had to put on a false smile, or act like she didn't care.
It was so nice to have someone around that didn't hate her constant blabber, the fact that she dressed oddly, or the fact that not many people liked her.
That fact alone used to kill her. No one liked her, or who she was, or how she dressed.
But knowing that Sam liked her was enough.
It doesn't really go along with Rachel's actual personality, but it fits for the story. Yea? ;]
