Chapter 1
"He's at the funeral," Jake said. I did not care if they asked for Charlie. I wanted to know who was on the phone.
"Who is it?" I mouthed to Jake.
"Carlisle Cullen. One of the stupid bloodsuckers." He sneered.
"Jake! Give it to me!" I yelled. If it was Carlisle, it must be something very important. Jake reluctantly held out the phone. When I reached to take it, he pulled it back, smiling. I hit his arm and grabbed the phone out of his hands.
"Hello? Carlisle?" I asked, almost breathless.
"Bella?" He sounded confused.
"Yes, yes, it's me, Carlisle." I suddenly regretted taking the phone. He was not going to come back, even if I was talking to Carlisle.
"Why did you call?" I forced myself to say politely, detached. I was trying not to think about him, trying to focus on what Carlisle had to say.
There was a pause.
"Bella?" This time, it was not Carlisle. The velvety smooth voice hit me like a ton of bricks. I was not expecting this.
I gasped out loud, clutching the counter top as not to fall. Surely, I was hallucinating. However, I quickly contradicted myself. I was not in any danger. But it couldn't actually be him on the phone…
"Are you there?" The voice came again, concerned. It was amazing, perfect. Even if it was a hallucination, I didn't want it to go away.
I was hesitant. "E… Edward?" I asked, very hopeful. I might as well find out now if it really was him.
"Oh Bella… Yes, it's me. It's Edward." He sounded shocked and relieved at the same time.
I burst into tears.
"Bella!" He was worried. He must have heard me sob. "Bella! Are you okay?" He asked. I only sobbed harder.
"No. I'm not," I managed to say through the tears. "It can't be you. It can't. And I'm going to have to pay for this hallucination later."
"Hallucination?" He asked, very confused.
"Yes." If it really was not a hallucination, it would be too good to be true. Way too good. I'm not that lucky. I had to end this one quick, before I let myself get too hopeful.
"I have to go," I said in a whisper. I hung up the phone before I could hear the perfect voice again.
If it was possible, I was crying harder than before.
I turned around, hoping to see Alice. She was there, although I didn't remember Jake leaving. But of course he did. He probably got out of the house as soon as I took the phone.
I ran into her arms, sobbing. She dragged me to the couch, patting my back. She looked slightly confused.
"Tell me what happened," she said when I started to dry up.
I told her the whole conversation. She was very patient. Although it was a short conversation, there were many times where I got lost in the hurt and had to recompose myself.
After I told her, she grew stiff. I looked up to see a serene smile on her face. Her eyes were closed, though. She was having a vision.
I waited for her to open her eyes, and when she did, she was smiling.
"Bella," she whispered excitingly, "He's coming back." She had a huge smile across her face.
My mind flew into overdrive, but I managed to get control of my thoughts after a minute. Alice saw him coming back. There was no point in arguing this. He was coming back!
I found myself smiling.
"Alice, is he really?" I asked just to make sure I heard her right.
"Yes, Bella. He's already on his way."
"Oh Alice!" I exclaimed, hugging her.
"He can't make up his mind, either going back to the house, or coming here first." She was still smiling.
"When will he get here?"
"Tonight, I'm pretty sure." I was standing up at this point.
"Oh Alice!" I almost yelled. "He's coming back! Edward is coming back!"
She stood up, and I hugged her tight.
